My daughter is going out on her own and looking to buy her first car.
Looked at lots and wants a vw polo. Not many around but found a 1.2 petrol 2008 hatchback in a small non main dealer garage.looks good and drives well with 3 months warranty .
But buyer wants 2800 after haggling.
    Overpriced or not??

She might struggle with insurance on a car older than 10 years. Especially of it's her first insurance under her own name.

Honestly wouldn't go after a polo.

Try Toyota Aygo as insurance will be ok or Yaris.

    Renault Clio or megane

    Ford fiesta

Engine wouldn't be the best in them, I really don't get the following.

She will get much more spec in others.

All polos are overpriced, they seem to hold the value, couldn't ever understand that either.

If she is set on it, get best price possible, any link to it

If they hold their value, I'd be happy enough.
    I'll try haggling again.
    Thanks

Nearly 3k for a soon to be 13 year old Polo is expensive but probably normal for what people pay for Polos. I really don't understand what people see in them to pay top dollar for them. They are nothing special, those engines are soft enough too and they don't get better with age. I'd certainly be haggling more off if she is set on one.

Polo is probably one of the nicest small cars from that era in terms of finish and appearance.

Engines are absolute chocolate, but if kept serviced correctly they can be ok-ish.

€2800 is top dollar for one IMO but if it's clean, NCT'd and reasonable mileage sure at least you are getting something for your money. If it's a high miler or has no history i'd be inclined to leave it be.

Depends on the spec and mileage, if its a Sport model with less than say 200,000km it sounds like a good deal. The lower spec models tend to sell for €500 or so less and I’d try avoid those. Sport model has front fogs, alloys wheels, and lovely sport seats similar to those in a top spec 08 Golf

If bought,Car will be serviced regularly.what are the chocolate bits in particular?.
Toyota household here and luckily only regular servicing here for 20 plus years.
I've put her into (imo) better cars when looking.
shes driving my 2.2 d as a named driver for the past 2 years...and she wants ....a polo...
She's so excited about this car.
It's probably a done deal,do what to look for in servicing please.

Oh dear lord jebus.... Going from 2.2 to 1.2 is absolutely shocking to be honest... That2.2 is extremely temperamental too....

The 1.2 just sh1t themselves if not looked after.

2008 is the horrid old model though, it's the 2009 onwards she should want.

The 1.2 has a reputation for burning oil, and they can get very loud and knocky with a few miles on them.

A Fiesta 1.25 is a far superior car.

Agreed bucket of sh1te with timing chains and valve issues and the saying goes buy cheap pay twice and possibly coming to end of life.
