Imported car with low reg number?

Might sound like a stupid question but looking at a secondhand car... it’s a 2015 and was brought in from UK in 2018 but the reg is a low number in 2015 (eg 151KE2200) - but when you register a retrospectively do you not get the highest number for that year plus 1 so these should always be high numbers?

Also, the car is taxed as black but it’s a very dark navy (almost black) - is that likely just someone mistaking the colour on registration?

    Thanks!

No that stopped in 2010, after that the import followed directly on from last registered Irish car that year.

I think there's only so many colours they can select, wouldn't worry about it unless you suspect it was resprayed.

In relation to the colour, wouldn't worry too much about it. Had a Skoda Fabia once. Might be called dark red or maroon if you saw it. Log book called it Orange.

    This too shall pass.

The numbers for most counties would be low. New car sales weren't exactly through the roof in 2015. Also its split between the first 6 months (151) and last 6 months (152) I have a 142 import that is in the 1400s.
Outside Dublin you don't see big numbers.

    Makes sense... thanks all

Pretty sure this is exactly what the OP is referring to. They just seem to feel the reg is a bit low.

OP, as others have said, registration numbers outside of Dublin can be surprisingly low. I had a late-half Offaly reg in the early four figures before. You can probably find out how many cars were registered in the county in question in the period in question pretty easily. Then you have your answer.

Being given a registration of 2200 for the first 6 months of 2015, three years later, is still very low. Kildare would not have an insignificant number of registrations every year, and think of all the cars imported from the UK to Kildare between 2015 and 2018 when the OPs car was registered.

Someone on here disagreed with me on this before, but I still have a suspicion that if a car is scrapped, the registration number becomes available again.

I have a 141 KE 3xxx and it's an import. It was imported in early 2014 by the original owner.

Nope, reg numbers are not recycled.
