Backed stratum for this couple of weeks bact at 50-1. I see the horse has now been renamed to stratum Albion. Have backed him again this evening at 25-1 . Obviously may not place but be interesting to see what would happen with the "stratum" bet if so. It shows as unsettled but has no cash out option available whereas any other AP bets I have (ie Cheltenham) would all have cash out available.

Anyway maybe tony bloom thinks that this is the year and wants to honour his club!!

Irrelevant. It's 4 and a half furlongs from the stalls to the first turn at Melbourne. Plenty of time to get the position you want. I think Tiger Moth could be special and carries practically no weight at all in this.

Always the first Tuesday in November, 4 in the morning here, poxy handicap, I don't think anyone in Ireland ever watched it until the commentater shouted "Vintage Crop wins for Britain" then they were all furious for two reasons, the permanently offended because he's Irish, and the punters because most of the missed a winner, and all claimed they would have backed him. Weld was a right shrewdie in his day, and Mick Kinane was a handy jockey to have on your side. Just looked up the year, it was 1993, Jesus I'm old. Remember it like it was yesterday.

It may be just a 2mile handicap but it stops the nation and this race has last years English Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck and this years Irish Derby runner-up Tiger Moth —-along with Sir Dragonet who started fav for 2019 Epsom Derby and 10 days ago won the Cox Plate over 1mile 2 furlongs —- a well recognised warm up for the Melbourne Cup .
The barriers open at 4am Tuesday —- will be up to catch all the hoopla the Aussies can produce with sadly no spectators present .

I can see Verry Elleegant going off shorter than it is now. It was the winner of the Caulfield Cup, but I really struggle to see how this can stay 2 miles on breeding.

Willie will obviously have Stratum humming, but I don't think it's well handicapped and if anything, I could see Dashing Willoughby reversing the form from their last encounter.

Surprise Baby was 5th last year and ran a cracking race considering it had a bad draw and terrible start, it will like conditions, it will stay and I think it goes close.

Vow And Declare won the race last year, but has no recent form and the first time fitting of blinkers has to be concerning.

Sir Dragonet won the Cox Plate this year but is another looking to make a big step up in trip here. I'd have question marks on this one.

I am struggling to see why there's such interest in Tiger Moth. He has never run 2 miles and has three full sisters, none of whom ever raced anywhere near a 2m trip. It must be showing something at home, but not a gamble for me.

AVD is obviously a classy animal, but this is the first time it runs over 2m. It will like decent group, but will it stay the full 2m?

Master of Reality, 2nd in last years race (demoted to 4th after) it is a proven stayer. I wonder will the race be just a little too quick for it tomorrow.

Dart falls on Surprise Baby at 9/1 for me. Small e/w bet on Oceanex at 50/1 with 7 places as well.

My bet is 100 at 13.5/1 Verry Elleegant.
She has few bad runs in her 21 races, seldom beaten by much ground.
The pace in the Melbourne Cup tends to be steady, and I prefer a horse with pace than an outright stayer.

Sir Dragonet for me —-took 11/1 on Betfair and set the alarm for 3.30am

Six-time Group 1 star Verry Elleegant is the absolute standout performer for her sire Zed, who has risen like a phoenix from the ashes. The Kiwi-bred stallion was originally an expensive purchase from the sales by a group which included recent Caulfield Cup heroine Verry Elleegant’s breeder, Don Goodwin. Zed had a light and injury-hit career and was retired to stud for a lowly fee, soon finding himself drifting into complete obscurity covering cross-breeds and Clydesdale horses in the remote South Island.

I'm sure they are confusing him with Frankel. :D

Congratulations , that is borderline aftertiming btw.

I have backed 3 ew with PP 6 places. Small beans I won't even watch the race, that is dedication for you.

Mustajeer - 100/1 6 places is crying out for a bet. This could well have been the plan since last year's Ebor. Overpriced.

Twilight Payment - at around 22's 6 places is also worth a bet, done nothing wrong this year if anything might even have improved for change in trainer, with respect to the Don.

Warning - I have no idea why but there is something about this horse that says it could win, never tried over the trip and 40/1 6 places.

On the Warning Bandwagon as well. He travels well up the arses of other horse's and gives the distinct impression he'll be better over a trip.

He needs to improve and get the trip and giving that he already has a G1 win this year this does not look to have been the plan. He is good enough though, I just think the price is skimpy and AOB has never won it.

I just realised Dashing Willoughy is in there at 80/1 ? I am having 2.50 ew on that. This would definitely have been the plan there.

He's a bit short , but im a big fan of the horse, and its possible AVD and Tiger and just miles clear of the rest. There the most interesting he's ever sent over. Ive done a few aob-aob-job tricasts just in case.

For some presumably form related reason/s I always seem to back Andrew Balding's horses in staying handicaps, so that was reason enough to back Dashing Willoughby in this lottery.. Can definitely make a case for him on form, and is a massive price too.

FANTASTIC RIDE FROM THE FRONT—— JYE MCNEIL GOT THE FRACTIONS SPOT ON —-TWILIGHT PAYMENT WAS NEVER HEADED.

BY Teofilo —- a son of Galileo and trained by Jim Bolger — a champion 2 year old who did not run at 3 as he suffered a knee injury in spring of 2007.

Tiger Moth — a gallant fast finishing second . Sir Dragonet was 6th . Sadly Anthony Van Dyck has injured himself — await details .

What a winner for Joseph, I didn't look too hard at it, but the horse stayed all day. Poor AVD though, that looked really horrible.

Watching the replay, Prince of Arran was desperately unlucky I thought, came home like an absolute train even after finding trouble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,092 ✭✭✭The Tetrarch

I watched the race now for the first time 24 hours after it was run.
On Tuesday morning I woke up at eight minutes after four, staggered to the TV, and watched slow motion replays of the finish, no commentary.
They showed the winner being unsaddled. I read the name Twilight Payment on the saddlecloth.
Before that I thought I might have the winner (Verry Elleegant 7th). Both horses had red and blue jockey silks.

    Well done Joseph O'Brien.
I think jockeys expected Twilight Payment to come back to them.
The race time was very fast for a Melbourne Cup.
It was an advertisement for Irish training and breeding.
    Prize money is incredible. 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th each got GBP 84k.
