Panelwork rust stains

I'm not a panel beater, and I'm not a welder. I ground down some surface rust which was pitted, treated it with loctitie rust inhibitor & used some P38 and primed it with some bog standard primer.

    I can't understand why this

ended up like this after a shower of rain.

I thought that if it was primed then it would prevent more rust from forming?

Or did I just use a shitty can of primer?

it might be coming from inside

you also need to paint it straight away

Its not from inside, the rust wasn't all the way through - only surface rust. Given that, its most likely that I didn't paint it so.

You have to give it more paint, I have found that rattle cans sometimes are pressure limited, If you want to get it to flash off, leave the can in a bowl of hot water for 5 mins before spraying, this allows it to dry faster and you can lay down more paint.
More paint will usually stop the pinholes that you have found.
Did you sand in between coats?
Also try using some high build and zinc primer it really helps.

I've not done much to be fair. I don't care about the paintwork. This is a long project and at the end of it I will be getting the van painted by someone who actually knows what they're doing.

I only wanted to grind off the surface rust and treat it so it'd be stopped.

Should I give it a few more coats of ordinary primer or should I go with zinc?

This is what the front of the arch was like before, you can see at the back of the arch there was minimal rust

Did you get it all right back to bare metal, including rusted sections? Thats some severe rust, you have slowed it down perhaps but nothing more

Yes - all was ground back to bare metal and treated with Loctite 7503 Rust Remedy, - little bit of P38 over it and then primer. None of the rust was through the panel

If it was me and I wanted to stop the rust, I'd sand it back and spray it with Zinc 182 in a rattle can.
Give it a couple of coats with a hot can like I said and then a topcoat.

Cool - I'll re-do it with Zinc and some sort of topcoat from rattle cans.

    Thanks
