Obligation for solicitor to file tax

    Hi all,

I've recently been in receipt of some inheritance and I'm due to pay tax on it. I received a letter from the solicitor stating that they will file the IT38 return on my behalf for x amount of fees, payable from the inheritance (haven't received the money yet).

My question is are they legally obligated to file returns on the behalf of beneficiaries or can I decline this service and simply file and pay the IT38 form myself - it seems straightforward.

You can file yourself. I did for both myself and children.

Is your guy charging e280 plus vat and admin charges for this? Seems to be quite the assumptive racket.

It was actually a bit more plus VAT. The way the letter was worded seemed like they had to file it for me. I called and confirmed this wasn't the case, and filed it myself.

Solicitors are not supposed to tout for business. You should report them to the Legal Services Regulatory Authority!
