Loan or finance 10k, and what car?

Need a new second hand car shortly as clutch is going on my 06 with high mileage so not spending any more on repairs!
I drive 300km a week for work. Had petrol so definitely going for diesel this time.
It's a second car so only prepared to pay 10k max.
Applying for a CU loan but should I consider hire purchase? Though I won't have a big deposit, only my car for trade in/scrappage which is not worth a whole pile I'd say. Any HP deals that may be suitable?
And any recommendations on which car to buy?
Would love a small SUV type but open to anything really.
    Thanks in advance.

Any particular reason for a small SUV? Definitely go diesel but the SUV shape will be a little harder on fuel given their dynamics.

If you prefer the higher position of the SUV or if its needed for bad back, hips, lifting in car seats, etc. then fair enough. I get the appeal. I have a Kodiaq for the kids and it works for us.

But if you're going small SUV for space, then consider an estate IMO. Better boots, probably cheaper as their not in fashion as such. Budget should get you into a 4/5 year old Megane estate I would have thought. Maybe a slightly older Octavia. Focus estate is another but a bit drab IMO. An older Avensis with a good spec look great. i40's facelift looks nice but interior is a bit meh.

If it was my money: https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/skoda-octavia-vrs-2-0-tdi-cr-184ps-dpf/25575010 something like that. But again all the usual checks and caveats apply.

If you can find an automatic, all the better. No point looking north or UK at this price. I think you'll be killed on Nox at this price range

In terms of HP vs. CU. Bit more flexibility but will cost you more per month and only worthwhile if you've the means to clear it early I think.

You need to give people some idea of what type of car you need or nobody will reply
What kind of car are you currently driving? Do you want bigger or smaller in the replacement car?
Do you need automatic/manual, 2 door, 4 door, jeep, crossover, estate etc
Any preference on engine size? Any preference on a year or minimu age?
All these will help people to give you some ideas, but without that, it basically leaves every single make/model on the market as a possible purchase for you

Thanks for your reply. Don't have kids but will have a dog soon!
I suppose I was going for small SUV as my only other 2 car purchases have been a fiesta and a Suzuki swift. I just want a change and a bit more comfort as I have a longer commute for work now... and am older too.
But maybe I should focus more on the spec than the size. Will be driving it for 5 years at least so want to make the right choice.

Thanks, yeah I can understand that.

5 door, under 2L diesel engine, preferably 2016 or slightly under.
Going from a Suzuki Swift now so I preferably want a small SUV but if not in budget, a hatchback as high spec as possible.

I don't normally jump in with suggestions or recommendations in the motors thread, but I think everything you've said there means you should at least consider a Dacia Duster. My brother has one, and while it's fairly basic, it's reliable and economical too.

It ticks all your boxes anyway, so as I say, I'd suggest you at least look to see what's available in your area. But good luck in whatever you do anyway.

Thanks for that. Yes I've been looking at them alright. Don't know if I'll get a 2016 for my budget tho.
Do you know what the spec is like on them? I presume basic enough?

Just did a quick search on Carzone myself, and you should be able to get a 2015 model for your €10k budget all right, or a 2016 one if you stretch the budget to €11k. So you're in around that ballpark anyway.

Don't know much about the specs as my experience of them is limited to just a couple of drives in my brother's car. I found it comfortable enough myself and I'd be happy with it, but then again, everybody has their own expectations and their own idea of what's acceptable or not. Would always be of the view myself though that there's nothing to lose in arranging to take one for a test drive, so you may as well try one anyway.

By the way, if there's any on the market near you, have a look at the Sandero Stepway as well.

You'd swear I'm a Dacia salesman.....but I'm not. It's just that if you're looking for something relatively new at a relatively low price, they're probably the go-to option. Again, good luck anyway.

Option b , spend a fraction on clutch than you will on interest for newer car and save ten thousand

2006, high mileage, - what's after the clutch?

Sometimes you have to accept that a car is at end of life

Newer car - far more efficient, lower tax bracket, good chance of problem free driving.

You'd get a 2015/16 megane estate diesel for that money
Cheap to service, fuel and insure.
    Not bad to drive either

    Hi guys.

Family recently got bigger (now 2 kids) so now am in the market for a 2nd car (1st is 2011 Auris 1.8 hybrid - great car, never a thing wrong with it!). Budget is in the €8-11k range. Looking for a crossover type for the height off the ground (bad roads locally) and space, did my test in the Auris so can only buy automatic. My daily commute is about 85 miles round trip so diesel would probably be best.

Currently looking at a Ford Kuga Titanium 2011, 140k miles, 4WD, 2.0 diesel, immaculate condition for about €8k.

Any thoughts on this or alternatives? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT apologies for hijacking your thread, posted in the wrong place!

It's just not an option anymore having spent on repairs for last year NCT, needing a tow and alternator repair last week and now clutch along with other bits needed in NCT this year. It has cost me more than I paid for it at this stage.
It is a great car tho in fairness and I got my money's worth but time for an upgrade, and one that won't need repairs for a few years hopefully!

    OP buy Gadge's auris

I note this sentence in your OP
"I drive 300km a week for work. Had petrol so definitely going for diesel this time."
That really is not a lot. 14000km annually.
    This include commute?

Anyway someone above mentioned the Megane diesel. Second this.

For 10k budget, don't be swayed toward the cheaper "premiums". ie 5 series A6 ets.
I'd steer clear of the small SUVs as well unless you relally want for buggies or bad hips

Go for a standard hatch or estate
    Focus, Leon, Octavia, Megane, i30
And think about petrol at that low mileage

Sorry, my mistake! This is one way so return is 600km and that's to work only, not including my own driving.

So the CU loan is approved and am still searching.
Very little selection of 16 Diesel around at the moment. The ones that are available, seem slightly overpriced I'm thinking.
Better to wait until January? Would the price of 16 cars go down then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,655 ✭✭✭Wildly Boaring

Look on UsedcarsNI to broaden options

car has been for sale for over a month
you'd probably knock 300-400 off the price
