Hi all,

I've done a bit of searching and seen that Rathbraughan Park has a terrible reputation as of 7/8 years ago going by some boards.ie posters. I was wondering could anyone from around the area tell me what it is like these days? My folks are retiring shortly and looking on moving out this way and found a house in this area that would be in their budget.

It has somewhat improved but the overall area is very built up. (This is in turn does not make it an ideal location to retire in). But budget plays a huge part where you can live so might be a case of getting the best house you can in that area. Recommend you visit the area multiple times at various hours before committing.

Thanks for the input Bronson, yes unfortunately budget is a large part of this. The house is lovely and they're more than happy with it but I'll advise them to visit it a couple more times to see what the area is like. It's good to hear that it's slightly improved. They really like Sligo but are on a tight budget.

If the house is at the front opposite Abbott it is probably fine. Alot of antisocial behaviour not just from students also residents. Family member lives very near here and have been broken into at least 3 times. Guards got some stuff back as they traced it to a neighbours house (Alot of previous convictions).

There's some house for sale in Tracey Ave that might be in their budget, very quiet area. Post office and a good Centra near by, also active retirement in Merville.

They were a very poor quality build, chipboard flooring, 4 inch walls IIRC instead of 9 inch for the dividers and there were constant issues with the window reveals. It wouldn't be my choice to buy in. The area mightn't new great either, though 3 or 4 houses distance can make a hell of a distance.

The developer upped his game in his next developments and the difference in build quality can be seen in the selling prices.

A two/three bed mid terrace in a former Corpo 1930s-50sera would be the best buy. They used to be handy got for below 80K, how far below depends on what had to be done. Anyone that comes up now seems to snapped up often by outside investors. They are a simple rock solid house and are great little renters with decent yields.

So did i. The shop was boarded then o p ened for a spell around 1999 id say but soon closed again. Has probably opened a few times in between too. Kids hanging around the alleyway didnt help.
Rathbraughan was fine back then about 50 50 owners v student. Looks alot rougher now. Its the last place id go to retire though.

Wouldn't live there myself but I am going on my impression from 20 years ago, may have changed since.

I lived there for a few years and it was fine,never had any hassle but I wouldn't advise it as an area for a retired couple.

Its very student oriented,plenty of issues with excessive noise etc

The houses themselves weren't great either and the few inqas in all needed work.They used to sell for pretty low money.

No problem. If you gave me an idea of budget and their appetite for renovations and how important a central location is I might be able to be more specific.

The one on John Street is there for a long time in a fat moving market. The one on Riverside needs a good bit of work, the one on Kennedy Parade needs more. The one in Abbeyville looks the pick, great little house if you could get it for the asking price.

Their budget is very limited unfortunately, they'd be hoping for 100k. They'd ideally like a place that they can walk into, my dad is a plasterer but he's well past the age of being able to do any of the work himself.
