    Are there any of county Waterford teams that could potentially dethrone Ballygunner ?

    I think it's long passed the time to put another club out in the east side of Waterford city. Fair play to Ballygunner they are a well run club and are reaping their deserved awards, but it must be awful demoralising for the other clubs in Waterford at this stage. Meanwhile on the other side of town you have Mount Sion, De La Salle and Roanmore quite literally on top of each other!

    it happened in the past when Mount sion and Roanmore formed..

    The thing is that it will get to the stage when you have such a volume of players that youngsters can’t get in the three main teams . If they have two senior teams with two separate panels . If you don’t go up I think I’m right that non of this year’s intermediate panel can play ..

    To be fair, BG don't and haven't dominated the Waterford men's senior team either and they are still streets above everyone and still walk the championship most years, so I wouldn't use Waterford underage teams as a burning example where BG have basically walked all those championships also.

    DLS have roots on that side of the city too, with the secondary DLS college and st declans primary school situated in the Newtown area. Most of the Waterford kids i went to school with in DLS secondary classed themselves as DLS GAA not BG. That may well have changed in the intervening years as DLS GAA opened their pitch in Gracedieu. However as far as i know They still have use of the secondary schools playing pitches.

    DlS soccer club had playing pitches off the Dunmore road and sold the land to developers in the 90s - they are now based in williamstown. Not too far from Ballygunner. Its not beyond the realms of possibility that the GAA club could have ended up in the williamstown area too. Im sure someone can come on here and confirm if that was ever really a possibility, but when i was growing up BG did not have the pull in the area that they seem to have now.

    One linesman as well, and of the umpires, one was a linesman in the first game played at the ground on the day. Cant understand why the County Board are not appointing referee's who normally do not do adult games at Senior, Premier Intermediate and even Intermediate level to run the line for these games. In saying that, the county board I guess are up against the divisional boards, LGFA and Camogie Boards and Bord na nÓg and there is not enough referee's to cover all games. Saw someplace recently that there was one senior LGFA game on a Friday evening recently and no referee showed up. The players it appeared were togged out and waited around for half an hour before going home.

    I don’t think there’s any possibility of a breakaway club from Ballygunner like Roanmore did from Mt Sion back in the 70s. BG as an organisation is set up so well and so inclusive, players of all ages and grades love going in the gates, no matter if they’re on the A B or C teams;

    Roanmore was already very much its own community before it broke away, the area expanded in the 1960s with development of areas like Roanmore Park and Kingsmeadow. Mount sions lack of capacity to cater for the growing number of youngsters and perceived bias towards youngsters from the Mt sion school over ‘blow-in’ families from the newer estates led to the break away. No chance of something like that happening within BG

    The only possibility would be for Gaultier to field a hurling team geared towards the Dunmore East area, as we know there’s already a Gaelic football and Camogie club situated there, but that would only serve to desecrate the Passage East club more so than Ballygunner as they also draw a large number of players from that area

    Your second point is the issue. There literally isn’t enough referees in the county. There have been ref courses ran this year and some of these have quickly been used as linesmen in adult games while also reffing underage games. It wouldn’t be unheard of for a ref to have 8-10 games in a week across all codes / ages. If a player was asked to do it there’d be people screaming about player welfare.

    Well done to Mark Fitz and Stephen Bennett for getting All Star nominations.

    Been a few years since any Waterford player got on the All Star team, simply won’t have a chance unless you get out of Munster…

    Most of these men are household names in Waterford still, but I’m sure they would rather have seen at least another all Ireland in the county in their lifetime. I don’t think too many people in Kilkenny or Tipp can rattle off their all Ireland winning teams from the 50s and 60s.

    It’s hard to fathom, whatever about the Barren spell from mid 60 to late 90s, but in the last 30 years we have not managed to land an All Ireland given the talent that has come and gone in the county. Aside from ourselves and Dublin every other one of the Liam McCarthy competing counties have won an All Ireland in that time. which is not a lot of counties compared to football.

    If we are to land the big one in the near future the key is not taking the eye off the ball at underage level. One minor win every 10/12 years is not enough. The hard work needs to be done consistently year on year starting from u5/u6s up. Keep the conveyor belt of talent coming and you always give yourself a chance. That and better managerial and coaching appointments with our county teams and development squads. We’ve seen some improvements in the last year or 2 and I have hope that we’re now heading in the right direction

    Odd. Azzurri have been struggling by for years with staff currently down to 3 days a week, and all of a sudden they can afford naming rights to a stadium?

    I wasn’t aware staff were down to 3 days/week but my thoughts were also around how a small company that (at least not that I’m aware) has much of a presence outside the county, let alone country could afford to sponsor it. Then again, it doesn’t mention what money is involved – is there any indication of what the sponsorship is worth?

    I suppose any commercial income is to be welcomed but it does feel a bit small time when you consider other counties have naming rights deals with much bigger name companies (including a few multinationals). Probably a reflection of our level of pull at the moment.
