I drive a 04 corolla 1.4 d4d carvan. Recently I've been charged €3.40 on the the way up, but on the way back I've been charged €1.90 numerous times , I privately tax the vehicle as I don't have commercial tax. What's the right amount I should be paying at tolls does anyone know or have any knowledge on this?

    Thanking you.

As far as I am aware they base it off your registration which would indicate that it is a commercial vehicle and that falls them the rate. You could pay cash and drive through that lane and pay a car rate if you want. But if you have a tag it will be commercial rate.

    What's on the log book?
    VRT of CVRT?

Yeah think it comes up commercial. Is cvrt on book. Just weird how I'm charged 2 different rates sometimes at different tolls.

I drive an estate with the rear windows factory tinted very dark. On numerous occasions the commercial rate has come up both at the cashier and the basket. This only ever happens at the Fermoy toll northbound.

The cashier I can understand, maybe they think I'm a van or whatever but the basket flashes up your reg and still tries to charge commercial rate. I have to get someone on the intercom to fix it.

OP, you hardly see the issue at the same toll??

I had similar, with an estate car with rear tints. The girl at the toll asked me 'are there seats in the back'. Confused me momentarily, as I was half expecting her to ask for a lift :pac: but about a second after she asked, it dawned on me why she was asking.

Drove estates with window tints for years, and that was the only time anyone ever asked or mentioned it to me.

I think (could be wrong) you need to change the tax to private first and foremost.

As it's initially intended to be a commercial, i do wonder if it still have to be DOE'ed, even if you change the tax to private.

Nope tried with my corolla. Went with insuremyvan. Was only 381 for the year which was cheapest I've ever gotten :)

Happened to me years ago driving a 7 seater Vito as a taxi, cashiers on multiple occasions were looking for commercial rate. Refused to pay it every single time.

If the vehicle registration cert states M1 category vehicle (Motor Car) you pay 1.90 if N2 (Goods Vehicle) it’s 3.40

Fermoy toll plaza are know to change the toll price if your vehicle looks like it’s goods, they don’t have a live link to the vehicle registration database.

he's asking about Insurance, I'd say you have to insure it for what it is but ask your Broker.
