Query for some of you car buyers used to dealing with dealers. I'm looking to buy a used car in Northern Ireland and wondering is there a rule of thumb on what i should haggle price wise. car is about 20k so should i be looking at 19.5 / 19 ? Any guidance on what sort of fat they build into the price appreciated....

They don’t really build in much fat but it’s always worth chancing it.
Usually the ones that are priced to sell are the ones you’ll be looking at in the first place.

In Northern Ireland you'd be lucky to get a fiver off

When I was buying a car up north a couple of years back I noticed the front tyres were about 75% worn and on further closer inspection found a small nail stuck in one sidewall. I pointed it out and the dealer said he would put on one new tyre as the other side was still legal .. he wasn't even going to match the brands. I kicked up a fuss and he was amazed I was prepared to lose the deal for the price of a new tyre. All I could say was 'right back at you' .. he finally relented and put on 2 mid-brand tyres - that was the only reduction in price I could squeeze out of him
