Saeed was like a knife through butter but Maxi was like a sword, voting Maxi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,717 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

I'll vote for Maxi there. Can't fault it.

The Saeed Al Owairan is a great individual effort, but the defending really is atrocious and unlike the Maradonna goal he's not in control the whole time. His momentum carries him along and he gets lucky with a random deflection and a miscontrol right at the end - there is a large portion of luck involved in that goal.

The hit and hope crowd are quiet on this one :)

Maxi for a spectacular volley gets my vote

Maxi Rodriguez, great control and a great finish

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

    Al Owairan 2-11 Rodriguez

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,735 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

I'm surprised that was so one sided!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

That was a decimation to be quite honest. Will this Asia vs Europe pairing yield similar results?

Ji-Sung Park (South Korea vs Portugal, 2002)

    VS

Marco Tardelli (Italy vs West Germany, 1982)

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,268 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

I like that Tardelli goal. Toying with the Germans in the box and then the great finish even while off balance. Have to be harsh at this stage of things and say that Vitor Baia will be disappointed he let the other goal through his legs; nice touches to create the chance but the shot was straight at the keeper.

    So Tardelli

Before I watched I thought "obviously Tardelli" but....

...the build up is wonderful, but his touch into space doesn't look deliberate and it's a snatched finish. I'm ignoring the celebration, as brilliant as it is

Park's chest control is great. He turns the defender well and the finish is good

Overall, I'm surprised I'm writing this, but... vote Park

Tardelli for the build up and the celebration

Park. Scuffs the finish a bit but it's a phenomenal goal

Tardelli, both good but not great goals, the occasion and celebration win out here.

    Plus that music :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,500 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

While Tardellis was a nice build up and an epic celebration, the actual finish wasnt outstanding.
Parks control was great, got a bit lucky, especially with the keeper. Looks phenomenal though.
    Voting Park.

100% Tardelli. Not sold on that Park goal at all, it's decent but not at the races against some of the others here.

    I mean...

    Nonsense.

I missed a couple there earlier, but kinda glad I didn't have to choose between two of my favourite goals of all time.

That Ronaldinho beat Cambiasso... madness lads!

Interesting bout here as two goals from the same tournament go head to head.

Vasily Rats (USSR vs France, 1986)

    VS

Josimar (Brazil vs Northern Ireland, 1986)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,717 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

Josimar, feels more deliberate. He takes a touch before he hits it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,735 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Josimar - further out, more of an angle, looks up and picks his spot. Cleaner build up too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

Both screamers, but gonna go with Rats as its the more unstoppable of the two IMO

  • Posts: 13,688 ✭✭✭✭ Aidan Important Spit

Similar, but Josimar is the more impressive.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,268 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

I always liked that Rats goal. As clean a strike as you'll see. No curve or swerve - just a straight unstoppable line 30 yards to the top corner. Wonderful effort

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 617 ✭✭✭afro man

Tough one.. Two great strikes.. But just edge to josimar plus he gave the legendary pat jennings no chance of saving it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,500 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

Close one this, Ratts, while taking nothing away from the strike, was a bit hit and hope, 9 out of 10 times that might land in row z. Josimar had more time to place his shot, so in that respect I think there was more skill involved.

    Voting Josimar

Never saw rats goal before this thread but josimar for me is the stronger contender. Neither gonna win it outright but still a quality goal

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,749 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Rats for me, just an incredible hit

Funny, that's what I like about the Rats goal. Bit scrappy, the ball given away cheaply a couple of times, and then Rats gets it and his strike is so perfect it just shouts out "**** that". It stands out more because of the earlier scrappiness for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭StevenToast

"Rats beats bats"....but he doesnt beat josimar here..

Josimar...poor aul pat jennings...his last game

I'm exiting this thread like Maradona exited to Bergkamp. If that was 'sloppy defending' by England then what do you call the defending by Ayala? Ridiculous voting by you numpties.:P

    Thanks Omackeral.

Whos' ready for some Knockout stage action?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Benjamin Pavard (France vs Argentina, 2018)

    VS

Fabio Grosso (Italy vs Germany, 2006)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,293 ✭✭✭Reberetta

    Fabio Grosso

Pavard will win, but my vote goes to the perfect, unstoppable left-footed curler that crushed German hearts and lifted the weight of a looming, foreboding penalty shoot-out from the shoulders of millions of Italians. An intense game ending with the greatest ever charge of Gross misconduct!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,268 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

    That pass from Pirlo...

And the iconic commentary - "Gol di Grosso! Gol di Grosso! Gol di Grosso!"

And yet I still think I prefer Pavard's. Technically such a sweet strike. The replay from behind is a super angle to see it from.

    So Pavard for me
