    Hmmm...

Beckham - fabulous freekick from miles out

Grosso - decent move and a great finish

Tardelli - Sniff of offside in the build up maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,690 ✭✭✭✭Skylinehead

All good but not great goals, so I'm going importance.

Tardelli - that celebration, decent buildup too. And in a final too.

Grosso - that was extra time in a semi final, lovely reverse from Pirlo into him, and slammed home.

Beckham - good goal but a free kick needs to be special to get my vote here.

Tardelli - such an iconic celebration to go with a quality goal and in the final!

Grosso - again a cracking goal and he was channelling his inner Tardelli with the celebration I think!

Beckham - quality free kick but just not all that memorable for me

I'm going to have to give number one to Grosso. I did select it, so I'm hopelessly biased.

Technically there's load to admire in it. Pirlo delaying the pass and drawing all the defenders and then slipping in Grosso. Grosso has time to take a touch, but just sweeps it in first time past Lehmann's despairing dive - there's a certain inevitability to it, like fate; of course Grosso was going to strike it immaculately first time, there was never going to be any other outcome.

I usually try to analyse the goals without really paying regard to the context of the games in which they were scored. It's the most objective way to look at the relative quality of the goals overall, but, I dunno, I can't look at that Grosso goal in a bottle, divorced from the game that surrounded it.

That was one of the tensest games of football I've ever watched, of such high quality and the stakes felt so heavy - a game where you can really sense its epic quality as its unfolding. Two high quality teams slugging it out for 90 minutes with no outcome, then looking like it's going to be the full 120 minutes. And then in the 119th minute Pirlo finally, unexpectedly, unpicks the lock and Grosso strikes with such brutal and decisive impact. Game over. Done. A climax of drama. The tension exploded in a single second. You see it in Grosso's face, the commentators words. Fuck that's proper goosebumps shit. It's the drama of football at its very best: that single unexpected moment that changes everything. Vote Grosso.

Tardelli is second - he also runs off like a madman.

Beckham's is a very good free kick.

Man, that's some serious justification. I really enjoyed reading that

    Grossi
    Beckham
    Tardelli

Ji-Sung Park (South Korea vs Portugal, 2002)

    VS

Robin Van Persie (Netherlands vs Spain, 2014)

    VS

Arie Haan (Netherlands vs Italy, 1978)

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

    Van Persie - It's different, it's epic, it's amazing.
Ji-Sung Park - fabulous control and finish
Haan - unreal strike, but there are better already through imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,755 ✭✭✭✭beakerjoe

Park , such great composure in such a tight space.

RVP.... iconic goal but its a hit and hope for the best. Nothing technical about it for me.

Haan.... a hit and hope that any decent focused keeper should save. Lucky for him the opposition keeper was ponder if the store still has the shampoo he likes in stock.

    Same votes for me please.
Though I'm not his biggest fan, Van Persie's goal would be a worthy winner of the whole competition.

    Van persie for the uniqueness
    Park
    Haan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

    1) Van persie - haven't seen that goal in ages, had forgotten how good it was

    2) Haan - good hit

    3) Park - not really doing it for me

First is Van Persie - It's just an audacious goal. He didn't have to finish it like that. If anyone could have brought that ball under control or finished first time with a volley it would have been Van Persie, but he attempted a header unlike any other header I'd ever seen before or since, chipping the keeper with a header - it's a unique goal.

Ji Sung Park is a second there. Great control, touch and finish. Maybe the finish is a bit unspectacular compared to what preceded it, but it's a high quality goal.

Haan is a great shot from distance, but the other two choices are superior in my opinion.

    1. Park
    2. Van Persie
    3. Haan

Im not voting on any of these goals...just enjoying watching them...

Any goal from the italia 90 sticker albums " Golden Goals" hold a special place in my heart...so i love e.g Haans goal, josimar, 'rats beats bats goal' etc etc

Nostalgia is a killer, i cant view goals from modern times as better than the older times because my brain is too fond of them....

    Overall my 2 favourites:

    1. Maradona v england 1986
    2. Carlos Alberto v Italy 1970

Haan - 1978 is the first WC I properly remember, and this has always been one of the highlights for me. If we had 4 nominations each this would have been on my list.

Van Persie - we just don't see enough diving headers any more, and definitely not of this quality.

Park - great control, but I can't help feeling the keeper should have done better

    Great stuff Omackeral.

Here's one that, somehow, didn't make it into the top 48 - shame on us!

That last touch is gorgeous. Would’ve got my second vote in most of the match ups.

At the very least we get to watch all of these great goals again Omack

Yeah its been a pleasure reliving those goals Omack.

    Fair play you bastard

Messi v Nigeria from 2018 was also hard done by not to make the cut:

Amazing control on the thigh and on the run, the second touch to make space and then the powerful finish.

That was a fantastic goal. IIRC he ran the show that day. Nothing like an Argie goal with a coked up Maradona.

Don't think I appreciated the beauty of the control for this goal the first time around!

    Knockout stages commencing at 14:30

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

    - As before, matches will last for 30 minutes.

    - In the interest of, well interest, goals from the same group will not face each other in this round. Aside from that caveat, all pairings are random.

    - It's most votes within the time allotted for a victory, with reasons for or against a choice becoming tie-breaker criteria should it be needed.

    The nation holds its breath.

Carlos Alberto (Brazil vs Italy, 1970)

    VS

Siphiwe Tshabalala (South Africa vs Mexico, 2010)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,545 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Suspect I'm on a loser here, but I vote Tshabalala

From the interception there's 6 players, 8 touches, 10 seconds, goal. It's so clean and incisive and fast

Whereas for the Brazil goal there's 78 touches and it takes a few days. It's like it's being played in slo-mo :p
People only love it because he's off screen when the pass is made. That just highlights poor camera work and how much space the defence had left

Plus - home nation in the opening game of the first ever African World Cup. But yes, you have to watch it on mute

Gotta go for Carlos Alberto here I think. Fabulous team move.

I enjoy watching Tshabalala's goal more, but ultimately I'll have to go for Carlos Alberto. I don't think it should advance any further, but it deserves it for the context, and it's a nice finish to be fair.

    CARLOS ALBERTO ALL THE WAY!

Carlos Alberto for me. Not a massive fan of either goal. But it’s a great team goal and a cracking finish

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,437 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

    Voting Balalalalalla....

I called it generic in the group stages, but after watching it again, it's much better than I initially thought. That pass was perfect.

Considering that Brazil side was probably the best world cup side ever, the goal was nothing outstanding in the grand scheme of things.

Carlos Alberto. Great team move and a great finish. A truly iconic goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,701 ✭✭✭StevenToast

I was actually at that south africa mexico game...the roof nearly came off the stadium with the roar...it was the first game of that WC...

But still Carlos Alberto...one of the games most iconic goals

The South African one! Not even going to try to spell his name. Alberto's is more iconic but not the more enjoyable of the two to watch for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

    Carlos Alberto 5 - 3 Siphiwe Tshabalala

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,679 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

I do love that Tshabalala goal - the quick passing of the counter attack, the screamer of a finish, the emotion. I also remember watching it in real life. I've a real soft spot for it.

But I have to go for Carlos Alberto. Yes, it's a bit slow in places. Yes, the Italians are knackered, but it's such a good goal. A masterpiece of a team move.

The languid slow passes at the start, nothing much is doing. Then Pele plays a pass and move and heads on up the pitch, we won't see him again until the climax. The slow but magical way Clodoaldo beats the Italians. The precise pass from Rivelino. That amazing, graceful, first touch from, Jairzinho, there's magic in the air now. Jairzinho driving towards the centre. And there's Pele again, at the decisive moment - slowing it all down, making time stand still, nonchalantly stroking the perfect ball into the path of Carlos Alberto. And then the emphatic finish. Beautiful stuff.

Edit: Phew, luckily missing the deadline didn't matter.
