I have a Zoom interview scheduled for the Senior ICT HEO position. Are any of you familiar with the interview process? Will there be many technical questions or mostly competencies? (Or a mixture of both). I've only ever worked in the private sector where I would expect to have to complete coding challenges during the interview. Would this be the same for the public sector?

Also, would anyone happen to have the booklet for the Senior ICT role? I didn't save a copy to my machine and I notice it's no longer available online.

Just checking if anyone who applied under the Operations stream has heard anything yet? This is the stream I applied for, and no communication so far. Thanks

I applied for Networks & Security only I'm afraid and those results came back today..all the best

Results of the EO ICT assessments are being sent around today, hope everyone got on OK.

I got a decent OOM (I think?) but scored slightly below 2143 in the assessments overall so I won't be called for the first batch. Then again, considering how long it took to get the results out I'd say a good few candidates have already accepted other positions elsewhere, so who knows.

I got similar results, OOM 53 (s/w dev). How do you know if you are in batch 1 or batch 2? Is batch 1 2143 marks and above? If that is the case then there are only 50 in the first I would think. I won't hold my breath but optimistic about being called for interview in the new year *fingers crossed*

No coding challenges - competency based interview, as described in considerable detail in the booklet. Contact PAS for a copy if you need it. You'll probably find one panel member will give you a technical grilling on some aspect of your experience. Practice the STAR technique for answering competency questions.

Hey everyone - I got the following reply from PAS and was wondering, are there indeed 3 "batches", Group 1 and Group 2 and Reserve? Some posts above indicate that yes, there are 3, but the message below implies that Group 2 is also the reserve panel.

Just out of curiosity, does everyone get placed in Group 2 by default if they don't make Group 1 or is Group 2 a good indication that you actually meet the required criteria and there's still a chance? Trying to assess how to juggle my other job applications.

Following a shortlisting exercise, those candidates who were successful at shortlisting were split into two groups. Group 1 represents those candidates who demonstrated sufficiently strong evidence on their application forms to be called to interview immediately. Group 2 represents those candidates who demonstrated sufficient evidence to be placed on a reserve panel.

Your name has been placed on this reserve panel. In the event that it is necessary to call further candidates to interview this office will be in contact with you
    .

that's the same message i received for Software Development , maybe it depends on the stream as to whether there are 2 or 3 groups!

Don't want to give specifics as I don't know the rules on this, but mine is in the next few weeks.

Out of curiosity, what grade was the below if its entry level? Grade IV?
There's another role/panel, but this is a EO level - not HEO:
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Specialists in the Civil Service

There are two competitions, ICT Specialists (EO) and Senior ICT Specialists (HEO)

The link below outlines the general Civil Service grades

    https://cc.careersportal.ie/mce/plugins/filemanager/files/DH/Civil%20Service%20Grade%20Structure.png

Grades in Roman Numerals such as Grade II, Grade IV or Grade V are Public Service grades and aren't comparable. These are grades in County Councils or the HSE for example.

If you have a few days to spare, have a look at all the different grades in the HSE in the link below. If not, have a look at the end of page 27 and the beginning of page 28 to give you the Clerical Officer grades for example.

    https://www.hse.ie/eng/staff/benefitsservices/pay/consolidated-pay-scales-1-october-2020.pdf

These are the County Council grades (from Clare County Council, but all county councils will be the same).

Go through the spec and for each competency put "Describe a time when..." in front of each of them. Then imagine that they will ask you that question and practice your answer. Use the STAR system and practice aloud.

It's a bizarre interview process that, as far as I can tell, will favour those who are best at telling a story (whether true or false) on the spot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

Nothing to do with these specific interviews. But people seem to do well in these competency format interviews with some professional coaching.

I'm not really convinced by "competency" interviews
but if that's the game take every opportunity to gain an advantage. Play them at their own game.

As said above. If you can string experiences and skills into one common narrative (story) around the theme of the competency being asked about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30 proFriendL

I had my interview yesterday, I was nervous.. Like the poster above I could have benefited from some professional coaching and a mock interview would have been good practice. I've many "stories" my skills & qualifications match the requirements really well but my downfall is nerves when put on the spot & I'm not a story teller!
Felt I was tongue tied at the start but once I got going I was fine.. still its a short interview I felt went very quickly , showing my nerves weren't a good impression.. I addressed it in my closing so fingers crossed thats overlooked. Didnt hep that communication was the first competency

The interviewers were very good, it was strange doing it remotely but they acknowledged it is different even apologized

Chair did the introductions, ran through my job history and courses, first interviewer covered 2 competencies - communication & skills
Next person covered Analysis & Decision Making & Delivery of Results
Then the chair covered Leadership & anything further you'd like to add question

Lots of questions thrown in along with the "tell me about a time you demonstrated" and a lot of them were specific to my application.. so know your application well - and have a solid story for each competency, there are 6 competencies listed on the job spec

Got a message today that I made the reserve panel for Infrastructure and Operations.

Good luck to everyone doing interviews now and in the coming weeks.

Just had my interview for ICT Specialists - Digital Transformation and Business Engagement

3 on the board, more or less 2 competencies each. Was fairly grilled by one who kept drilling down further and further

Big emphasis on communication and change management I felt

Best of luck to all remaining

Last comp I did there was 7 weeks between interview and results, could be February most likely with Xmas break

I got scheduled for an interview for Senior ICT Specialist Infrastructure and Operation for mid January. Never had an interview scheduled five weeks in advance - does that mean I'm on a reserve panel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 554 ✭✭✭brownbinman

its probably due to xmas and interview board availability

I'm surprised at the speed too. I came 6th, is this a regional or national figure?

    Fair play!

national I'd say, assume vast majority roles be Dublin based though

Well done you too !!! Delighted to have results.

Unfortunately Dublin not one of my choices, but sure we will see what happens, to be honest I'm grateful to pass the interview!

Did we choose our locations on the application or is that next stage? I'm only interested in one location.. Not Dublin

Did we select region in the application form? I placed quite high on HEO Software Development order of merit but have no recollection of being asked about location preference.

I just checked the online application form, it doesn't seem like we did select a location in the application form

Usually you select the location on the PAS section, before you upload your form. So wouldn't be on that

    Hi folks,

I'm not sure on the process of panels

I got placed 12th by order merit via an email from PAS.

The mail also said PAS would be in contact January 2021 in regards to clearance.

It's a bit cryptic on how to interpret in in my opinion.

Does anyone know that is my rank good enough to get an offer?

Am just a little lost as I never applied for a civil service position.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭trigger26

congrats yes if you're being contacted about clearance then good chance you will be offered a role

Yes. Congratulations are definitely in order. If they're talking about clearance, you're more than likely being considered for a role!

    Thanks all.

    I hope so.

I'm just very new to this as I've been in the private sector for a few years.

However I view position 12 as saying that there is 11 in front of me. But if I'm correct there could be more than one position possibly available?

There'll be a good few, it's spread across the larger IT departments, like Revenue, Agriculture, Social

However I'm hearing DPER and in particular OGCIO taking on good number of HEOs

    Oh ok.

I thought the roles were very limited.

Good to know, thanks for your response.
