Sewing a lawn - advice please

I'm planning to sow some grass seed soon. Lawn was ruined by builders about a year ago. I killed what was left of it and dug it over with a fork about 6 weeks ago. A lot of superficial roots were exposed. I now need to apply more weedkiller before sewing grass seed about a week later. I presume there's no danger of damaging my trees by spraying weedkiller on the roots?

Any recommendations in what to do with the roots? Should I remove them or just cover them with new topsoil. Do I even need new topsoil?

    Thanks.
