What spec items is she particularly interested in?

Does she want stuff like keyless start, LED headlights, sunroof, CarPlay/Android Auto or is it just normal enough stuff like aircon, cruise, alloys etc?

Always found the Renault Clio and Peugeot 208 to be nice little cars, had a 206 way back in the day when they were new and it was a nice little car.

New models of both recommendations above out now but the 2018 versions were nice too.

Micra is seriously updated from older ones, no longer complete bargain basement stuff

In recent years I went from an (old) fiesta, to a suzuki swift to a new (ish) micra.

The best of them in terms of reliability was the old fiesta, hands down. Shortly after I got it a guy in work offered to check the oil and it was bone dry, but the car was still running!

The suzuki had nice little interior extras but was plagued with clutch problems (why I got rid of it in the end). Another (minor) issue was its big ass, no joke, the ass of it was clipped so many times while parked in car parks.

The micra is the smoothest drive of them all but its interior is a lot more basic than the previous two - small beans, but it annoys me how it shows the petrol tank level. And they swapped out the intuitive 3 dial fan system for an over engineered panel that seems to take much longer to use. No heated mirrors so I also miss that.

VW Polo is a great wee car and always has a good resale value. My wife is currently waiting on delivery for her new Polo - this will be her 6th one and never a bit of trouble with any of them. My brothers wife drives a Micra and they swear by it - it's a lovely car. I myself have driven the Fiesta (hire car) and found it to be a very enjoyable fun drive.

It's all down to personal choice of course but for me the Polo would just edge due to build quality and resale value.

Good luck with your purchase either way.

The look of the car is a bit take it or leave it, but I do recommend a bit of research into the Honda Jazz.

    This too shall pass.
