I was stopped by traffic core late at night and I turned right with a left turn only sign at a junction, guard seemed reasonable and said I would receive a fine and didn't mention points, just wondering would points be involved

Seemed reasonable they're not. Be expecting the fine and points as you didn't follow the traffic lights

They don't want an argument about it at the side of the road, so they often don't mention the next steps. Plenty of posts like yourself on boards wondering what the outcome will be.

Had a garda stop me when I was on the bike and had me pulled in at a filling station. He got out of his car and went into a big long spiel that motorbikes are dangerous etc but was being courteous and even friendly throughout. I was being my usual contrite citizen when in these sort of situations and by the end of it we were shaking hands and 'best buddies'. Nothing more was said and I got back on the bike and drove off.

FCPN arrived about two weeks later

Yep, last thing they want is confrontation. They just want to write the ticket and have the least amount of hassle possible.

He probably thought, "that'll teach the contrite". :D

In the actual forecourt of the filling station? You'd have grounds for appeal there. It must be done in a public place.

The forecourt of a filling station is a public place under road traffic law, and also whilst an offence would have to take place in a public place, they do not have to actually pull you in in a public place.
