Prepay for just calls/texts without monthly fee

    Hi

Am getting a Nokia 105 non-smart phone for one of the kids so they can use it for just calls and texts going to and from school. Occasional use, not enough to warrant a monthly fee.

Do the mobile service providers still do plans where you can top up and use whenever you want without incurring a monthly fee?

This page suggests they do but I've browsed their web sites and all I see is monthly PAYG plans.

    Thanks
    Stan

Yes, you can do this. I use Tesco prepay at the moment. If I top up €15, I have unlimited calls & data for 28 days and keep the €15 to use on other things such as texting. If I don't top up once the 28 days expire, I still have what's left of that €15 to spend on calls, data or texts.

Thanks Mekirin - that sounds great, just what we want.

Although the Tesco page here suggests that you lose the 15 EUR credit after the 28 days, if I read it correctly...
With Prepay 15, when you top-up by €15 in one go, you will receive 28 days of unlimited calls to any network, 15GB data, free texts to all other Tesco Mobile customers and €15 credit. All elements will expire after 28 days, (including the €15 credit) if unused.

That can't be right? If it is it's a joke.

The Three offer is €20 for 28 days, and you do keep all €20 once the 28 days are up. Comes with free Three to Three calls, free texts to all networks, and 60 minute calls to other networks. So if you yourself aren't on Three, it will eat into the credit. There is a €15 option as well which is the reverse of the above, free calls to all networks with 60 texts, but I don't know for sure if you keep the credit or not (which again, would be a joke)

Three changed their offer for new customers a while back. They don't keep the credit anymore AFAIK.

I must have been lucky enough to sign up prior to them taking away the unused credit so. It's never been taken from me yet.

AFAIK the only Tesco keep credit plan is the legacy 3G plan. When 4G became available (a couple of years ago) the credit was taken to activate the plan. The current plan says that credit is kept...BUT....it's gone after 28 days...use it or lose it.

Lyca have a keep credit offer similar to the Tesco legacy 3G plan....BUT....credit expires after 90 days.

All networks allow keeping credit if top up is lower than the plan activation amount and you then pay as you use at standard rates....BUT....call rates are high at around 40 cent depending on the network. There's also a condition of top up every few months to keep the SIM active....generally it's six months.

This might suit you for at least 6 months.
    https://www.virginmedia.ie/mobile/

It's a monthly bill but you get all calls, all texts and all data for €5 a month for 6 months on a 30 day contract.
So you can use it for 6 months with unlimited everything and if you want to move only have to give 30 days notice.
After 5 months move to someone else but you might get a reduced offer to stay with Virgin or they may have another offer then.
The only downside is you may not get SMS verifcation texts from
banks, Paypal, Revolut and others, some users get them, others don't.
