Dog training - Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo

    Hi all

I rescued a dog at the start of lockdown (Collie cross) and everything was going well when he was being walked in our local area due to the 2 & 5 km travel restrictions.

Once restrictions eased and I was able to bring him to the beach or woods I've found he started aggressively barking at strangers he meets and it is only getting worse.

I've tried distraction training and watched heaps on YouTube but it's not working. Im obviously doing something wrong but think I need a professional to help guide me in this. I've contacted several dog trainers and a lot aren't taking new clients or are way out of my league affordability wise (300 euros for 2 hours).

Could anyone recommend a one on one dog trainer in any of the above counties as I want to be able to bring him out but at this stage it's not enjoyable for me to bring him anywhere but around our local area.

Any help would be really appreciated.

    Hi op,
Which area are you in? That's a big spread of area covered by those counties, so if you narrow it down a bit, it'll hopefully be easier to help you with suggestions.
    €300 is verrryyy expensive for a 2 hour consultation:o

    Hi DBB

So I live on the Galway/Clare border, work in Galway city and I'm from Sligo so can travel to any of those counties for training. At this stage in desperate to find someone who can help so will travel no problem.

Ya I thought the price was outrageous if I'm being honest. Thanks for your help!

    Hi again op,
Claire, Galway and Mayo are very short of good trainers and behaviourists, unfortunately. There were some really good people out west, but they're no longer operating in the area.
However! Cillian Costigan is in Sligo. He's an APDT Ireland certified trainer, so he conforms to an ethical and research-led approach to training. Hopefully you can set up a session or two with him that'll help you.
    Here's his website:

    Best of luck! :)

Thanks so much! I've been in touch with him and he's not taking any new clients unfortunately but sent me on some resources to take a look at. Can't believe it's so hard to find someone but I'll keep on searching!

    Do you have insurance?
Some insurers cover the cost of the consultation so could be something to check out.
