MacBook Air + Samsung monitor question

Looking for a bit of help as I can't seem to find anything online about this. I have a MacBook Air connected to a Samsung monitor via an Anker adaptor and everything is working fine in that regard. In order for my monitor to work, I have my MacBook Air closed and stored in a vertical holder next to the monitor. My questions/issues are:

    1) The MacBook Air also needs to be plugged into a socket so it appears to be charging whenever I am using it, which can be for several hours at a time. Will this pose any problems for the battery on the laptop?

    2) I always seem to have problems starting/waking the monitor as using the keyboard or monitor does not seem to work. I always have to fiddle with the on/off button on the monitor until it seems to connect. A minor issue I know but I think there might be something I'm missing/overlooking.

    Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
