If possible could you give your definition of what the word SHAME means to you?
If somebody say you should be ashamed is that to make you feel guilty?
Or if someone says you shamed your family, does it mean you let your family down?

I have regret, i've been sorry for things I've done in the past, but i've never been ashamed or shame of the things I done.

So what is your take on SHAME

We had a German Shepard growing up. He liked to poop in private down the back of the garden, between the shed and the coal bunker. If you looked out the window at him while he was going, he’d give this big-eyed sad look with his ears folded down, and kind of shuffle into the corner, still in a half seated position, in a vain attempt to get out of sight.

That’s the epitome of shame to me.

Your two examples are often the way the word is used - often imposed on people by people. I'd say it's more like shame lite. The real, strong emotion of shame is more likely from within.

Using phrases like "hang your head in shame" is a classic emotional manipulation phrase designed to induce guilt and bend someones will to match your own i.e thats a shameful thing to say/do..inference being dont do it again and have the same beliefs as me. You need a lot of awareness to recognize it in action.

Like the word "should". That word never, ever comes from within eg i should have a bigger house, i should have a better car, more sexual experience. Should= family, school, peers and religious conditioning. Should is never from within.

If I do something incongruent with my own moral compass I’ll feel a dose of it.

I don’t think the “SHAME, SHAME, shame on you” brigade actually know what the word means.

First they came for the socialists...

I'm a pretty laid back person and the notion of telling someone they should be ashamed is a bit silly with the obvious exception of anyone who does anything that is mildly annoying to me in which case I like to shame them in dramatic fashion.

Yes. I wonder would it depend on the motivation of the person laying the charge of shame and the character of the recipient.
Some wouldn't care, [shame less?], some might be energized to rectify the situation. Some might take it too much to heart.
In some circumstances, depending on the individual, it could be corrosive.

Having one of your parents walk in on you as you attempt to pull the skeleton out of yourself through your groin.

Shame is very different from embarrassment.

Embarrassment is something you can recover from. It’s even something you can laugh about at the time, or at least afterwards.

With shame, a little bit of you dies. There’s no recovery. No laughter. There’s a sadness, for everyone involved. And once it has visited you, there’s no shaking it. No redemption.

You’ll tell people an embarrassing story about yourself at a party over cocktails, as a bit of whimsical entertainment. People, and you, will laugh.

The only person you’ll tell a shameful story to is a stranger in an empty bar, over a cheap, neat whiskey. And you’ll tell it as a cautionary tale, with a steely look in your eyes. And the silent stranger will be changed by your story.

Your mother finding you masturbating, that’s embarrassing.

Your daughter finding you masturbating, that’s shame.
