I'm sure at least some of ye have been around ye olde internet block since time immemorial and have some stories, either fun, terrifying or both, to recall from your various online experiences over the years.

    Let's hear some of them!

The exploding whale video is the first one I remember seeing on the internet, around 1995, so a decade before YouTube existed, and before there was enough bandwidth for the ubiquity of porn videos. I remember watching it and thinking "this internet thing will take off".

I watched a movie recently, where they were using floppy discs! lol

Is it possible that the internet and PC's were both simultaneously one of the greatest inventions ever, and also one of worst in terms of their negative impacts on society?

Working for a large computer company that may have had two locations in Ireland one of which was in Galway (I was in t'other).

They had a collaborative bulletin boards system which was also used for non-work discussion topics. I thought it was good fun and there were some very imaginative and inventive posters.

Lo and behold someone uploaded the whole contents to the web and I could re read my pretty pathetic contributions from over thirty years ago.

i first accessed the internet in the mid 90s in college, Windows 3.1, Netscape and Trumpet Winsock, I always found the latter a funny name

There wasn't much point looking at porn, downloads were too slow and images were often in 16 colours IIRC.

However when the college PCs were upgraded to far superior Windows NT machines a year or two later, massive quantities of porn were viewed. I wonder in more modern times does that still go on - logon to a PC in college and spend several hours looking at porn, would such activities be monitored and sanctions imposed.

My sister in law worked in an "internet cafe" years ago and was plagued by dirty old men looking up porn on the internet, and then...well.
    Not a nice job.

    Bad move.

I googled that because I have no clue who that is.

    Even badder move.

Internet where I came from and grew up? you may as well be talking about trying to get to the moon. About '99 or thereabouts when I was in 6th class primary we "got" the internet, not until I went to 3rd level was it a regular thing and advances in technology.

I first got the internet in the summer of 1997. When I returned to school after the summer holidays that year, I was first with all the Princess Diana jokes.

Do yourself a favour. Don't look any further into him. He's so autistic that it will actually affect your own mental health.

    No joke.

I remember the first time we got internet at home it was one of those boxes you hooked up to the tv.. remember falling over myself to show my dad how the ‘internet’ worked, cue me waiting for at least ten mins for the dancing hamsters to load.... I can still see the disappointment on his face, I was trying to tell him it would change the world..... the dancing hamster’s probably wasn’t the best advertisement :)

There's a guy on YouTube. Making a history of his life. He's on his 42nd 45ish min video.

    Fascinating!

Some of my first memories of the Internet include playing Starship Troopers flash games and my mother visiting BertieAherne.com after some lad bought it and filled it with porn hoping to get a payoff.

Wonder if he ever got the cash.

Amanda Tapping, who played Sam Carter. I actually worked with a lad called Sam Carter.

When I started university in 1991 the internet wasn't quite ready so we went on Usenet groups. Amazing at the time but it was all text. Still, at that stage people had lyrics to any song you wanted, scripts to any television programme, etc. It was impressive. And I got my first two e-mail addresses in 1991, one of them I could pick my own username. :D

An older mate of mine got a PC in about '97 and I remember three of us waiting an eternity for a photo to load of a girl kneeling in front of a large erect penis. It's still the most erotic moment of my life.

The first almost flat rate dialup in Ireland from esat surf no limits (paid a flat rate per month, and was no call charges between 8am and 6pm), then getting a letter telling everyone not to abuse it and later disconnected towards the end of the summer in 2000.
