Legality of state assisted suicide/euthanasia?

    Correct me if this is the wrong forum to raise the issue of state assisted suicide.

    But ultimately it appears to me to be largely a legal matter.

    This topic has probably been broached here time and again but, pfff - hell, it's so mind boggling to me that we wander on and leave this issue unaddressed due to some individuals personal moral quandaries.

    ....

    In my mind it comes down to one thing only.

    Preclusion of suffering.

    This goes for long term illness, simply being too compromised to care for oneself, counting the days until the clock runs out etc.

    I don't want to go into essay territory on the opening post so firstly let's just clarify;

    This is an issue of the legal system, Dr's being given the right to administer life ending drugs where it's desired by the individual in question and their family members etc;

    Correct?

    No?

    No perspective as to why this difficult ethical issue remains unaddressed?

    One argument I've read is, medication historically used is in short supply - phentobarbitol.

    However, given lethality of potent opioid in overdose, this is being now used in certain US states for lethal injection.

    Fentanyl - and it's not exactly in short supply.

    ....

    My general contention is that, honestly, if I had a loved one in such a terrible situation such as terminal illness and every day in agony - I'd administer a shot of fentanyl to them myself (provided they wanted to end things, which they almost certainly would).

    I may be liable under law for this.

    Point being, law is in dreadful need of reform on this matter.

    In particular for end of life circumstances - every day in pain and just waiting to die.

    .....

    And this last note with a personal flavour - should there come a time (hopefully a long time from now) and I find myself in a dead end situation and this isn't medically addressed by that time - I'll definitely just take this medical matter into my own hands.

    Hi,

    I think it's long past time that we had a referendum on this issue.

    Personally, I thnk it should be legal, subject to certain conditions and restrictions.

    My bet is that its taking place regularly across the country and its just not spoken about. "Mercy killings", if you like..

    Thanks,

    G.

    My personal opinion is that if somebody is reaching the end of their life in serious physical pain and discomfort then they should have the choice to end their life under medical supervision providing they are able to make the decision for themselves.

    I hope myself or anybody I know is in that position but I fully understand why people would want to go that route.
