Employment in the west of Ireland

I’m currently completing a business degree in university and I have been told by many people that the only places I can expect to get decent employment is in the big cities ie. Cork or Dublin.

Is this necessarily true? If possible I would rather stay close to home after graduation. For clarity my major is in insurance so I would be hoping to complete the professional exams and become a certified insurance practitioner.

May be a stupid question, but I would appreciate help all the same!

    Define "decent employment".

Does it mean close to your family, low stress, kind employer?

Or does it mean large brand, highly organised, large budget, opportunities for promotion if you're aggressive and network?

There are opportunities all around the country. More in the large cities of course...

Not sure where you are in the West but Limerick would not be too far from a lot of areas of Clare,Galway and even Mayo thanks to the new motorway so it could be an option to explore!

Unsure whether there are many job prospects for insurance there at the minute though but it would be worth a bit of research.

Best of luck with whatever you choose though and trust your gut with what decisions you make !

I did business development many years ago in Athlone. To say it was an uphill struggle is no exagerration.

By decent employment I would mean some sort of permanent role where I could continue to live close to my family.

I’m realistic and wouldn’t be looking for a massive salary due to the low cost of living compared to say Dublin, just enough to be comfortable.

I like the idea of staying nearby to family and friends rather than uprooting and moving across the country.

That’s true actually, it’s very possible to commute to limerick from a lot of the west of Ireland these days!

There are definitely permanent roles in the West of Ireland which don't have massive salaries...

Have you tried looking at the jobs available?

Know a few folks who work in insurance in Galway, some even got the cerificates while working. Don't think they're earning big money as such, but they have a nice life.

Make sure you look into working from home. There are some very big players in that space in Ireland that would fit your degree perfectly.
