I’m driving a 2011 megane 1.5 Tom Tom at the moment, I drive around 500 Klms a week commuting work but not on a motorway.
I was thinking of changing to 2013/14 Qashqai or ix35. I’m spending around €40 a week on diesel, how much more roughly would I be spending if I changed to either of those, don’t want to be spending a fortune on diesel.
Or are these totally wrong cars for commuting?
I’m looking for something that’s reliable, economical and fairly easy on the eye.
    Open to other suggestions too.

I think they’re terrible choices for what yore asking. Be better stick with the Megane. Quashqui are gutless and not nice to drive (in my experience, has one for a day while my ex insignia was in fir a service couldn’t wait to drop it back, just gutless and horrible handling).
    The IX35 feels ancient.
Get a newer Megane. Will be more reliable, better tech, nicer drive and cheaper to run

Stick with the Megane if you're only thinking of moving up a couple of years.

I wouldn't say the Qashqai is gutless though (probably same engine to what you have, and a newer Megane won't be much more reliable than either because of that), they come in all guises and some are a pretty nice and comfy drive, moreso than the Megane you have. But you won't get much more economical than what you have.

Your figures don't add up though, €40 for only 500kms or so? Should be more than that.

At €1.20 a litre that's about 6.6l/100km. Worse than I would expect a car like that to be doing on the motorway, unless you have a lot of urban driving on either side of it?

Edit: Just notice he said "not on a motorway", that sounds about right then.

Yeah I was just about to reply that it’s not motorway driving. My commute to work is around 100kms a day round trip. And then usual driving around town at the weekend and that.

What sort of roads is that 100km done on? If you're returning 6.6L/100km in a relatively efficent car like the Megane than perhaps diesel isn't the right choice for you. Have you looked into getting an economical petrol or a hybrid car?

It’s a regional road that I commute on and I live in a town so driving around that too. I probably spend a little less than €40 a week.

What petrol car would you recommend? I had a 07 golf 1.4 petrol before I changed to the megane, around 2 and a half years ago. I don’t want to spend too much on something when it’s losing value by the week with the kms I’m putting on it. Then I was thinking of letting my wife have the megane and I get a 2010/11/12 diesel golf or A3 for work. I think the crossover idea has passed now.

Odd, regional roads at anything between 80-100 is where I'd have expected you to get better efficiency, around 5.5 or less. I don't think I've ever seen average consumption as high as what your getting.

Megane is 5 speed most likely, the other choices are going to be much worse to be honest and aren't comfortable for that style of driving.
