Are 12 EDTs enough?

    Hi all,

I am currently learning to drive, today I completed EDT lessons 5&6, having done 1-4 back in January. Today was also my first lesson in an automatic car, having switched from manual as I feel more comfortable driving automatic.

I am just wondering if anybody here has only done their 12 EDT lessons before proceeding to do their test? (I am aware that those who pass their test in an automatic car can only drive same) I have booked my test already (which won't be scheduled until I have completed all EDTs) and am aiming to get all lessons over and done with and have my full license by the end of the year.

None of my immediate family drive, and I don't have a sponsor since I've switched to automatic, so I am unable to practice in between lessons with my ADI. the feedback I have gotten so far has called for improvement when gripping steering wheel and correct positioning. However, I feel that I have improved significantly since switching to automatic, as I don't have to worry about becoming too focused on the gears and/or becoming distracted from same.

I would like to hear your opinions as to whether this is usually feasible? Or, as recommended by my ADI, would I require a few additional lessons? Such as pretest.

    Thanks,
    Mark

I'm in the same situation tbh. Not a hope of getting practice with a sponsor and will be buying no car until I pass the test.

But I'd say they 12 might be tbh if you spend them mostly driving. I've my last 2 coming up next week and will prob do a couple more to keep up practice while waiting for test date but I'd be very hopeful I'd get over the line first time.

They might not be enough for some people, nervous etc but it's not off the wall to think you could be competent enough for a test after just the 12.

Starting from scratch, with no practice between lessons, it’s very rare but not entirely impossible for someone to be ready for test after only 12 lessons.

An ADI tester once described the EDT lessons in a the grand scheme of preparing to pass the test using the headrest of my car. His opinion was that the 12 lessons were only 1/3 of the height of the headrest if passing the test was the full height.

Remember, the recommendation/expectation is that you do at least 3 hrs practice after each lesson. This would give you around 48/50 hrs of driving to learn and practice the topics in the syllabus.

Unless you have a really incredible instructor, and you also catch on very quickly, I’d say the 12 EDTs won’t be enough. The concept of the EDTs are a bit flawed, in my opinion. Instructors have to cover off certain skills and challenges in each lesson and sometimes they get so focused on this (which is understandable as they have their syllabus to cover and their own business to run) that they don’t focus as much on what the individual pupil actually needs to improve - they just move onto the next lesson and “tick the box” as the previous lesson being completed.
