    Box H314 . Lot 267

Lot 267 - Mastercraftsman (IRE) / Marvellous Ways (IRE) Ch/Gr.C. (IRE)

The sire Mastercraftsman is one of the most underestimated sires around. Considering he had to beat the likes of Sea the Stars, The Rip, Fame n Glory etc , he was a great racehorse and his fee is peanuts all things considered.

The Dam is young enough, only 6yrold and her daddy Lawman won an Arc so there is a nice staying pedigree. Could potentially be a NH racer depending on what the owners were up to. Both Daddy and Granddad on damside handled most ground, always a good thing.

Could really be anything and I think sometimes you need to take a punt when buying horses.

In saying that I couldn't train a baby to piss in a pot, so good luck to anyone who takes a chance with him.

Not a big fan of the dam considering she ran 9 times, was placed once and ended up with a rating of 51, however Anna Law (also by Lawman) the dam of Battaash showed virtually nothing in 4 runs and ended up with a rating of 45.

What i do like is that 6 of 7 runners from 8 foals won for the 2nd dam with the best being Master Carpenter who had a one time very smart rating of 110, he was also by mastercraftsman so the cross worked well for the family before. As you already mentioned mastercraftsman has done himself justice with his stock to date, i see the dam was sold for 46k after her racing career and the covering was 25K so connections would need a nice payday to reduce investment. All in all this was an interesting selection to look through, so thanks for posting.

    1st choice: Lot 3
    2nd choice: Lot 243

I examined the pedigrees of all 447 yearlings to six generations.
My idea is to count desirable factors in a pedigree, maximum 8, higher equals better.
    The counts are 0 (79 yearlings); 1 (134); 2 (129); 3 (68); 4 (29); 5 (6); 6 (2); 7 (0); 8 (0) = 447 yearlings.
My 2020 filly foal (other thread) has 7 factors.

You will get a useful horse using top quality sires and mares.
I think you will get a better horse using a quality sire and mare if their pedigrees suit each other.
And you might get a useful horse using a moderate sires and mare if their pedigrees suit each other.

My old 2008 PC was out of action from 3rd June until today.
Although I could analyse pedigrees on my other PCs I could not view pedigrees on screen.
My choice now is lot 3 By Camelot out of Young Daisy Miller.

However, as with almost all lots in all sales I do not like the excessive duplication of sons of sires in pedigrees. To me it is a negative.
In lot 3 there are six sons of the duplicated sire Northern Dancer (Sadler's Wells; Nureyev x 2; Danzig; Night Shift; Nijinsky), two sons of sire Raise A native (Mr Prospector; Alydar); and two sons of Hail To Reason (Bold Reason; Roberto).

Lot 443 Bated Breath x Wild Storm ( Dubawi )

I'd be hoping to produce a well bred Listed class filly. The sire is reasonably cheap at £12,500 considering the amount of 100+rpr stock that he has produced and the dam is a 94 rpr rated dual 10f winner by Dubawi who was progressing nicely until she flopped when favourite over 12f at Newmarket. The trainer blamed the Soft ground which seems reasonable. On her previous form of 2 wins and a 2nd on her debut as a 2yo she was heading for Listed Class until that end of season flop as a 3yo which helped to send her to the paddocks.

Wild Storm's dam The World ( Dubai Destination) is a half sister to QE II winner Poet's Voice ( Dubawi) who was a good sire himself. It's a very good family, I'd be hoping that the moderate stud fee of Bated Breath would hold down the price of Lot 443. Even if the filly never made it to the track she'd still be a lovely broodmare prospect.
