    Hi folks,

Got the green light to trade my 11 passat, have 15k and looking at stuff around the 20k mark (will try sell the passat privately)

Have looked at the usual suspects, want to be sure I'm not missing anything outside the norm 5 series, a6, superb, those are the models that have caught my eye so far.

Would ideally like something with good spec, automatic and reliable

Any recommendations out of the three or any leftfield?

    Thanks!

Volvo S90 is a magnificent looking machine. Don't know if you'd get one for 20k though.

20k will get you a 2016 in either the 5 series or the a6 but both were fully replaced by new models soon after, the a6 in 2018 and the 5 series in 2017. You won't get the best example regarding spec and mileage in 16 for 20k though, they're a little bit above still.
You are essentially buying a facelift model of a 2011 car with either of them.
This might not bother you (I have an a6 like you are looking for and also had the 5 series but since sold) but if you either just up your budget or wait another year you'll be seeing current models of the 5 series come into budget. 2 years really for the new a6. I probably wouldn't wait myself but just advising. Have a look at the newer models and see if you're still happy to get a 16, which are still damn fine cars in their own right. Note the differences between SE models and msport /s-line. That's a big decision for me.

Also the Mercedes e class current model came out in 16 and might be an option for you.

They'd be the big 3 and after that I'd be looking at volvo, lexus

Thanks for above, agreed the s90 is beautiful but unfortunately no chance of getting one in budget even bringing jn from the UK. I didn't realise the E class was updated in 2016,definitely feel the older model a6 is starting to really age.

Spec is pretty important, if I could find an m sport 5 series with wide-screen I'd definitely consider. The only other potentials are 3 series Estate, not sure how a well specced version would match up

3 series is also decent once you don't compare back to back with a 5.
Youd get a very nice 3 in budget and although I haven't driven a 3 series since the e46, all reports say they are a much more nimble car.
The only ageing the cars you are looking at is the infotainment systems screens and digital cockpits, quality and engines and handling is more or less the same and by going e class you can be up to date with tech. The new a6 is best by a mile in my opinion but will be a while before its in your budget (and mine)

If you’re happy with a Passat, I’ve been looking at a few R Lines in the UK the last few weeks. 20k would get you a new shape 16-17 R line over cleared and prob taxed too. In some cases better the devil you know 😀

I think you will still struggle to get a decent 2016 5 Series M Sport at that price unless you buy with high mileage.

I brought in a 2015 last September with 25k miles and it was more than that. On top of this from recently checking, the UK prices are holding well on these too.

The 3 series is good but there is no comparison to a 5 in interior finish. I have had two three series and I love how they drive but these days I like the comfort of the bigger car.

I think the 3 series estate is a good looking machine in fairness, its down to personal preference if you like the interior on the 3.

Come up 2 grand and down a year and you can get a 2015 Mercedes CLS.

If reliability is your main concern, Lexus is the way to go.

I’ve an A6 which I love but the sensible part of me wishes I’d bought a IS300h. Would be a downgrade in some respects in terms of some aspects of quality but the annual maintenance would be cheaper. Have had a lot of small unrelated things go wrong on the a6, bulk of which covered by warranty but the reliability doesn’t seem to match previous generations.

Also the Lexus hybrid engine is somewhat future proofed incase the government starts going hard on diesels.

Not sure how the Lexus is300h would be a downgrade in any area of quality? Much better built machine imo, perhaps in the lower spec lexus the leather is slightly tacky looking.
I have an f sport and my brother has an A6, we both agree in quality the lexus is well ahead, that's a 14 Audi however.
The is300h is a small car I find, if I was to buy again and I recommend to the op,
Lexus Gs300h for 22-25 k. The interior is more dated than the is300h but bigger.
Dream car but out of budget is the 450h!

I only meant in certain aspects. Used to drive Toyotas and can see some of the DNA when it comes to some buttons and plastics. Speedos, entertainment and displays much better in the Audi.

True, speedo in the f sport is unreal, lower spec models are quite dated however , Audi always have the styling on point whether inside or out, saw a 201 A7 yesterday, what a car!!

If you added a brain to that spec you might make a better contribution to the thread.

In normal times I probably would have headed to UK, cant really see it being an option at the moment. Have been looking up north but prices seem higher there than mainland UK, presumably because of the Irish buyers. Lexus might be a good option, I dont really know much about them but theyre a nice looking car. Thanks all, plenty of food for thought, need to move soon, spending 12 hours a day on donedeal is not healthy!!

So you think it’s ok to travel to the Uk at the moment when we are being pleaded with by government, Heath experts etc not to leave the country? Particularly places like the UK which is full of the virus.

2017 C350e could come in on budget.

Push it up to 22k and you'll get a low miler easy enough.

Nice car although it's riding very high!

I had a 520d SE on loan while my own F30 was having work done on it and I didn't like it as much as I should have. It's a big, heavy boat of car and when I got back into my own it felt like getting into an M4 :P

Having said that, the 5 was more comfortable and I was amazed at how good the fuel economy was. The readout was saying 10 miles left in the tank when I got it and I put €30 into it which got me from the dealership in Naas to Dublin, back to Tipperary and about a week's driving after that. I put a tenner into it afterwards and by the time I was collecting my own car, I parked up at the dealership and the readout was again 10 miles left.
