Hello A friend of mine had a learner permit but let it expire and also the second one expire. Is it the third one thst we have to have proof we had to have applied for a test? What happens if he hadn’t applied for a test is there it over in his application for a learner permit or is there another way around it to start from the 1st learner permit again. Just because he didn’t apply for a test is hardly the end of his driving career before he even started? I know he shouldn’t have wasted all the permit ands let them expire but there’s surely a way around the requirement of having to have a test booked. Is it to do the theory test again?

The only way to start from scratch is to let the licence expire over 5 years. Then your friend would have to do the theory test again and start over.

I'd just apply for the test, then renew the permit.
The waiting lists are going to be very long with the covid backlog. Plus, you can defer the test twice without losing the fee. So it's not like he'll be asked to sit his test next week or anything! It will likely be next year before he will have to do it. :)

I'm actually in this exact position, however I've also lost my expired learner's permit. I can't apply online and need to show a proof of appointment for a test.

But I can't apply for a test online without my number.

Should I just contact RSA for the previous number and apply with that?

As far as I recall the number is the same in all LP's allocated to the same person.

Thanks - will call RSA tomorrow as cannot find a record of my number anywhere!
