I recently booked 4 nights through booking.com for a place in the west of ireland.
However i happened to come across the places website and saw the prices they had advertised were about 22 percent cheaper than booking.com...
is this because of the price that booking charges..is this the norm?

Yes it is common enough. Hotels make more money by people booking directly with them. It's also not that rare for places to be cheaper on Booking.com, particularly if there is a Genius discount. Most of the time there is no/negligible difference in my experience. You should always check both of course.

And of cheaper, particularly a well known, independent, or place you have stayed before, book direct.

Also worth calling if you see a cheaper rate on booking.com - a few places I regularly stay at will beat that if you book direct.

It's always worth comparing over different websites and directly on the hotels website.

We made a reservation through booking.com before and the hotel contacted us asking us to cancel the booking and book directly through them. The reason being that booking.com make money off the booking and hotel make more money if you book directly through them. Their own rate was actually more expensive than booking.com, but they charged us the same amount as booking.com charges. Win win!

Booked a place in Spain before on booking.com, they rang me a day later and asked would I cancel and book with them for 100 less. That was 10% less so I did.
Its worth checking booking.com and then direct too.

You can claim a refund for the difference if you happen to find your reservation cheaper on another website.

A lot of hotels are contractually obliged to offer Booking the same rates as they offer direct.

They get around this by giving Booking a rate that has free cancellation and then offering a cheaper rate direct which is non-refundable.

Check that all the details are the same. And if you have free cancellation with Booking (but are sure you will take the trip) then you should be able to cancel and book direct.
