I'm not sure if this is the right forum, if information on historic crimes isn't available to the public under FOI how do writers or crime journalists get this information?

In court cases they usually list off previous convictions,

Today's guy involving Healy Rae has 1 previous conviction, can't remember what it was for but it was 14/15yrs ago I think.

This is an unsolved murder case from the 50's. I recall police reports being revealed in crime docs and books etc, is this information public after a certain amount of time?

Sorry - that wasn't clear from your original post - as has been mentioned, a murder 60-70yrs ago would have been extensively covered as it would have been national news, and the court case would have been covered also.

these days sadly - a murder/death could be a half-page or even less.

A local man was questioned in relation to the murder and I'm wondering if details from that investigation would be available to a researcher?

only if they were reported on in the newspapers.

There could be many ways for a journalist to get that level of information, one of which is to ask locally or ask journalists who were tasked with reporting it. Many journalists keep their notebooks for many years after an event.

Many people who were living in the area at the time will remember such an event, journalists at the time would have flocked to the area to ask everyone and anyone for information.

Have a look online for information on the fr Niall molloy case, another unsolved murder....sometimes victims families can tell you who has committed the crime or who they believe has committed it, they will also have information of who was interviewed etc

Apparently a local woman revealed the killer on her deathbed and a few local people who visited her at the time recall this, it seemed to be something she'd been carrying with her, it wasn't the man that was initially questioned. The victim had been splashing cash about in pubs for some time and was often drunk in local towns so he was more than likely followed home.

It's not Kerry no, I'd rather not say where it happened, small country and all that.
