Unconditional love

Do parents unconditionally love their kids or is that a load of bolloxs? Surely there are some circumstances where you'd find it hard to love your child. If they became a murderer, terrorist, rapist, child molestor? Should it even exist?

I know some famous criminals still get visited by family so it must be a thing.

Do you think it should be limited to parental love? What about in a romantic relationship? Love for your spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend

Do parents feed drugs to their children, or is that ethical?

Parents, just like anyone else, are human. There are some people who believe in the concept of unconditional love, and some people who don’t.

There’s the whole concept of honouring your parents too, but again that’s something some people believe in, and some people don’t.

I wouldn’t call it a load of bollocks though as there is some validity to it, like the examples you suggest of parents who love their children regardless of what their children become or what their children have done, and there are some people who love people regardless, or unconditionally, so I don’t think it’s actually limited at all.

I don’t think it’s a concept that can be limited or unlimited, it just depends upon how the people involved feel about other people such as their parents, their children, family, brothers, sisters, other relatives, friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, exes, etc.

    Unconditional... within limits.

As with anything else, these things vary but parents usually get plenty of the bonding hormone, oxytocin, to help them love and care for their children. Presumably that doesn’t always work or the child could be so genuinely unpleasant that the parents can't love the child.

There's an interesting* show on Netflix about babies (called Babies, I think) which talked about oxytocin and bonding. An interesting finding was that parents brains change and release more oxytocin. They found that men's brains do the exact same thing as women's brains and their level of oxytocin was the same - they expected mother's to be higher than father's.

*whether it's interesting to you or not is probably completely dependant on the the stage of life you're in at the moment.
