OFCH or portable heaters?

Hello there, we've got a good deal on renting a great big home, built probably in the late 80s/early 90s, that hasn't been maintained much for the last 10 years and apparently guzzles oil in the winter. I hate to think what the BER would be. We wouldn't be using the whole house - only 2 of the 5 bedrooms (one very very large, one largish) and one of the 2 living rooms (one small, one large, tbd).

I'm wondering what will be the least expensive approach to heating the place. Of course we can shut off radiators in rooms we are not using. But I'm wondering if using portable heaters might be a cheaper option than using the central heating? If so, I don't know what is more efficient - convection heaters or the oil filled radiators?

    Advice very much appreciated.
