Spoilt children

I remember a friend of mine back in 2004ish when GTA San Andreas came out. He and his brother got a PS2, a GTA disc and a memory card from their parents for Christmas.

They were constantly rowing over who got to use the PlayStation and when, to the extent that their mam bought them a second one. The fighting didn't stop there, they started rowing over who go to use the disc. And, lo. They got a second disc as well.

This same fella's birthday fell around the time of his uncle's passing. His grieving mother never got him a present, understandably so.
A few weeks had passed and he got a set of golf clubs. His brother kicked up because he wanted one too. And.... You guessed it. He got it.
My friend (whose birthday was originally missed) wasn't too pleased at this. He said his brother getting the same thing "belittled" his birthday present so it wasn't really like a present at all.... You guessed it, he got a separate present to make up for it.

What are your spoilt children stories? We were 13-14 when these happened.

Spare the rod and spoil the child.

Yeah, it happens. If you're going to keep them for more than about a month they should really be frozen.

One of the lads I know has 2 young lads. He spends about 2-3k each on them at Xmas, crazy.
One of them had the Nintendo ds, but he had it in every colour available, I'd have gotten them all and smashed them together into little bits, sellotaped them back together into one multicoloured ds and gave him that the little sh1te.

Sadly that can be topped :(
GTA Vice City is now 18 years old. The kicker is that the game was set in 1986 and released in 2002. That's 16 years. More time has passed since the games release than it's retro setting upon release.

Really spoiled kids you posted about there. Me and my siblings played games growing up and had all the consoles. Thanks to a wonderful mam. None of us never fought over them. Again, that was probably due to a wonderful mother we had. Had sadly being the keyword I have to use today.

It makes you think about these spoilt kids tho. Surely they would be the same type of 'gimme it's mine' selfish attitude today as adults. Sure some people can change with maturity however not always.

Sure half the fun was playing a game with your sibling.

You're setting your spoilt kids up for a fall when they enter the real world.

My kids always fight over the (single) console. I've definitely failed as a parent although it is fun to switch off the WiFi during their fortnite session when the bickering annoys me too much.

I didn’t consider myself spoiled when I was growing up but I certainly never wanted for anything. I had to listen to a lot of reductive, jealous comments from people though.

It’s the same for my three year old: I gave him an iPad during the lockdown because 1) they’re fantastic learning devices 2) I don’t have the time or energy to be a full time babysitter while I’m WFH. Some people think I’m spoiling him but IDGAF.

I see it a lot with parents who have two boys or two girls close in age. They are almost treated like twins and that's not good for anyone. I have a neighbour and they are dressed the same, get the same presents, get shoes/ clothes etc at same time. They don't even go on playdates unless both are invited. There's 15 months between them.

I see with my own children that the youngest is at that stage where she thinks that she can fill her pockets amd bring home whatever toy takes her fancy when visiting. I don't allow it. I will listen to the roaring and crying now because she is only two, rather than dealing with this spoilt shíte when she 7 or 8.

Supernanny Jo Frost is back on tv after nearly 10 years and i watched her show last night. It seemed surprising how firm she was with the children but that is only because we have gone completely the other way.

I work colleague of mine changed the wifi password to "nottellingyou".

he could honestly say when they whinged for the password not telling you.

We only had the one console growing up in the 90's between me & brother. I think we only had 2 different ones in total throughout.

Supernanny? That’s all fake, you’d be as well asking the McCann’s for tips on making it through the holiday.

I got a Gameboy, and thought I was the bees knees with Tetris. My friend got a sega mega drive from his dad, and he had Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic!

I wouldn't worry too much about that. We were probably a bit like that in my house and we're all the best of friends. Don't underestimate being close friends with your siblings, it would be worse if they couldn't get along.

These days, I'd worry about our child not having siblings. They miss out on a lot of important socialisation, especially with this plague. Siblings are so important, and if they can be friends that's surely ideal?

When my oldest lad was younger, toy story mania kicked off with him and all his friends, young lad up the road immediately had all the toys, all of them, woody alone was €60 a pop, buzz was 70 back then... I told my lad, you can get one for your birthday, actually felt sorry for him, he had a felt board with them on it and used to carry it around.

The irony is at 5/6 my lad asked my why ‘young lad’ up the road breaks all his toys, he had seemingly thrown buzz off the wall that morning and broken him in a tantrum (3 days old). He said he’s like the bold boy in toy story, breaks everything he gets ... that’s what happens when you get everything you want the minute you want it.

When I finally got my lad woody, he carried him everywhere, minded it like a baby. We got professional photos of them done around the time and woody is in the bloody pictures 😀

Same lad up the road has had a tv in his room since age 2, iPad, playstation etc not long after. He’s a little ****. School bully and obnoxious at the grand age of 10.

His mother asked me how I got my kids to read the way they do, ‘there different like that’ she says .. ah... I didn’t stick tv’s/consoles in their bedrooms as toddlers maybe’.

I don’t mind getting my kids what they want, but they don’t get it at the drop of a hat, they earn marbles for good behaviour/vocabulary/manners, lose them for bad behaviour. When they get a full marble jar they get what they want, took them a year to earn two DS’s when they were younger. The ds’s were there choice and I was happy to buy them, they 100% earned them.
