No idea with the Corolla, and maybe I'm taking you up wrong, but I assume what you mean is the brake light and parking light come on together?
If so, it's just a dual filament bulb and one of the filaments is burned out

No parking light comes on OK.. . But if I hit brake the light won't come on on drivers side only

There’s 2 lights in the one bulb like Mad_Mike said. One of them is not working, change the bulb.

Bulb is blown, if you brake the side lamp will go out as the element is energised in the higher wattage brake lamp.
    5watt and 21watt bulb together.

Just make sure to get the right one as some the pins are slightly different.

bulb changed yesterday … still not working I may try switching bulbs to see if that works

Is it the correct bulb you fitted? Some only have one filament.
Could also be a worn or water damaged connection where the bulb hits the terminal, have a look for discoloration on the little tabs inside the bulb holder.

Yes unfortunately that can happen as they are extremely cheap.
