    Hi there,

Asking for a friend who is worries about claiming illness benefit. He is here since 7 years of age and holds a Irish Citizenship and may be getting married in next year or so. He is afraid that if he claim Ilness benefit it may affect visa for his spouse as he is getting married to a non European.

He has been working since he is 18 and has never claimed any sort of benefits from the state.

Can someone clarify if it does have an impact?

He has never missed a day from work since he started working 7 years ago but now due to an ongoing illness and forced change in his work role has added to stress which he was already going through during illness.

He feels he needs a break for 6-8 weeks but also needs to pay bills at the same time.

I know for Covid Payments it was stated it will not have any impact on such things.

    Thanks.

He "may or may not be getting married" to his spouse seems a bit confusing.

    Which is it?

Why would him claiming Illness Benefit for 8 weeks have any baring on him getting married to a non national?

It makes no sense to even think that .

Sorry , I meant to ask does this affect visa application for his wife in future?

When applying the do history check on the person to see if he has claimed any benefits from the state in the past and that is a factor when reviewing the visa application. I personally know people who have had their spouse visa refused as they claimed job seekers benefit for a few months.

I said he may be getting married in next year or so meaning the timing could change.

Visa applications refused solely on the grounds of a jobseekers claim made by their spouse .

Id find that very hard to believe, what was the reason given?

There's a huge difference in visa terms between applying to come in as a spouse and applying to come in as an unmarried person who may or may not be someone's girl/boy friend.

He's worrying a little too much.

Him claiming social welfare assistance whilst he is unwell and out of work will have no impact on his possible future wife's visa application.
