friend mine purchased a 6sp gearbox for an 2005 renault trafic privately last monday, 250 euro, was fitted on Tuesday afternoon and it was going great, went into al all gears, no grinding and driving 100% and drove to work and back with no issues, wednesday morning when he was towing his ifor williams trailer with a heavy load it changed and now something has went on gearbox, it can be drove but got so noisy.
contacted the seller and he said it was fine when it was in his van

It's unlikely it was broken before your friend fitted it and drove it heavy load.
He doesn't really have a comeback with seller. I assume 250 means a private sale with no warranty.

Above all guesses. Without opening and checking the box it's anyone's guess what is wrong.

box was fitted and going ok, problem started when started pulling the trailer and something must have give, its just got so noisy, maybe a bearing has gone, he was hoping for money back but to be fair it was going ok when fitted for few hours

Any second hand part you take your chances, like you said it drove fine when fitted. 250 for a gearbox is very cheap so it certainly wasn't reconditioned. I don't think you've any comeback. And those gearboxes are made of cheese anyway...

I've no experiences with gearboxes whatsoever, but would there be a chance that some other alignment is off which resulted in damage to both the original and replacement box? Seems very unlikely both would go so quickly.

it seems something went in gearbox (maybe a bearing ) when he put the trailer with load on,

his last box was grinding and would not go into several gears, this box is going into all gears but the noise is terrible now

    Did he change the clutch?

yes, would the extra load to tow cause a bearing to go?

If the van is rated to to that weight, then it shouldn't in theory, but what stands out to me is two broken gearboxes in a short length of time.

What is it that the van was towing?

Was the release bearing changed? Does the rattling and noise stop when the clutch is pressed?

how many Kgs is that plus the weight of the trailer and van plus anything in it? Very easy to exceed the weight/load limits of small vans and also your license category :)

If the rattle was in the box,it should have stopped when the clutch was pressed.
More likely the centre of the clutch disc. Make sure both allighment dowels are filled.
Reasonably easy box to strip though,if need be.

I rebuilt a 6 speed traffic box a few years ago, somebody else fitted it.

Lasted 2 weeks, master mechanic that fitted it lost one of the dowels in the bell housing.Flittered the centre out of the clutch disc.

noise only started get real loud when the trailer went out it, could this cause bearings to collapse as loud noise in it all the time now,
    one of those things maybe

Correct me if I misunderstood, didn't you say the noise remained with the clutch pressed. If the noise is there with the clutch pressed,99.9% it's not gearbox bearings.
Pull the box out again either way.

he took Gearbox out and seems very little oil in the box

Those boxes are a disaster, notoriously brittle. It's one box I'd get rebuilt rather than chancing a secondhand one.

Anyway, you say no oil in the box, I wonder is the diff worn and when the trailer was attached, accentuated the play in it, making the noisy, and allowed the oil to leak out through driveshaft seals? Any evidence of gear oil where the van is parked?

Is there a dual mass flywheel on that?
