If your employer was asking you to spend a few nights (potentially being a couple of weeks) at a site (accommodation and petrol paid), is it not expected there would be some additional payment for essentially giving up your entire night in a hotel 100+ miles away?

Being vague, but say an electrical type job.

Not usually your hotel and travel is paid so you wont get an allowance just for staying away.

    Ok.

I'm a bit surprised there's be nothing.extra for essentially giving up several evenings in a row.

Some businesses pay in line with civil service expenses rates, which are available online. I don't think there's any obligation to pay though, once travel and accommodation and meals are provided. What does your contract say?

In my company you get an allowance for over night stay in addition to mileage, and hotel. Think it's to cover food, drink etc...pretty sure mine is €35 or €40.... its been a while since I was away. A day expense, say if I was at a trade show or conference is €12 or €15. So check it out with finance or hr, every co is different.

So, I've done this at both an engineer (technically a supervisor) and senior management level.

At engineer / supervisor level I would expect a per diem of at least EUR 75 per day so I can buy breakfast / lunch / dinner and a few beers. I can accept less if the hotel comes with breakfast and dinner.

At a senior management level I just get to cover my expenses. This should be unlimited but within reason.

I’ve had a few jobs in companies that paid this.

One was a flat €40-€50 per night with no need to provide receipts.

The other was up to $130 per day but could only claim for receipted items.

I’d absolutely expect compensation for staying away from home. Your daily expenses are going to be higher if you are buying lunch and dinner every day as you don’t have self-catering facilities in a hotel.

In a nutshell, it's up to the employer if they pay an additional sum or not - there is no legal requirement to do so.

If they do pay an additional sum, the next question is whether it's taxable or not

Is subsistence being paid? You've referred to accommodation and travel, but not meals?

Breakfast with the hotel and an evening meal yes.
