What's your take on recruitment agencies?

Found myself being borderline harassed to sign up through one last year when I applied for a job advertised through an agency.

Went to their office, signed up and heard nothing since.
Do staff operate on a commission like basis to sign people up? Are they effective for the most part in finding employment for people?

They work on commission in matching job seekers to jobs. If they put you forward for a job and you get hired, they get paid commission. Often when a company has a job, several agencies will forward c.vs and it's in their best interests to put forward the best calibre they can.

It depends on the agency and their scope of jobs/expertise. I used one to get my current role (internal audit). The recruitment agency was quite a small one & the recruiter I dealt with specialised in internal audit and related roles. It meant a much better discussion as to what I was looking for, my experience and what I didn't want. It also meant he had good connections with the businesses he was dealing with as he wasn't sending them random candidates.

As for some of the bigger ones who seem to be very broad in terms of roles - never had much success with them. I don't connect with them on LinkedIn anymore nor do I respond to their mails except for a polite no thanks.

    Most are useless.
I think a lot of companies have moved to their own Talent Attraction/Sourcer teams, especially the bigger MNC's but its also more common with smaller companies even if the TA team is one person.

These days its important for a company to have a good grand on glassdoor/indeed company pages etc, having a sales person from a recruitment agency be ****ty with a applicant wont fly.

Of the bigger ones, I've has a mixed experience with "Recruiters" but i'd still think they are the best bigger one

No, never heard of that. The company gets a commission from the employer when they place a person with them, provide that person status with the employer for a certain minimum period.

That is not their purpose. Their there to find suitable employees for the employer not the other way around. Employers work with them rather than direct advertising as they act as a filter and do most of the prep work for employer.
