Eircom DSL to 3g failover dongle

There's a fairy tale going around about being able to use the USB port on your Eircom modem to plug in a 3G dongle. The idea is for the modem to fail-over to mobile broadband when the DSL cuts out.

While in theory this is possible and part of the Eircom manual for each modem - I'm pretty sure you can't just plug it any kind of 3G dongle. I bet there's a narrow list of compatible dongle manufacturers and models.

Have anyone here ever set up say an Eircom D1000 modem with a USB 3g dongle? What make and model is it? Does it reliably switch over to 3g?
