    Hi All,

I have been given a 2006 Pajero LWB 2.5 jeep for private use.
The commercial tax is something like €333.00?

    Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, 2006
    Body: 5 Door Suv
    CC: 2476
    Fuel: Diesel
    Colour: Black

Do i need to change this over to private tax which is a lot more expensive or can i run it for the next few years on the commercial rate?
Does anyone enforce the commercial/private tax anomaly?
    CVRT/NCT???

Think unless you have Vat number or herd number they'll be looking for the 1500 or so private tax

To use it commercially you need to have a 'business'. You don't need a VAT number to have a business, depending on your income from said business.
I guessing you need to be a farmer to have a 'herd' number, but I know little about this line of work.

Most smallholders just use their PPSn on those forms ;);)

Insuring it alongside a private car might be more of an issue to you due to no-claims-bonus crap, but there are some companies that will "mirror" the ncb on your currently insured car onto a commercial policy though.

Legally you can't drive it on commercial tax if you don't use it 100% for commercial work. So nearly every commercially taxed vehicle you see is breaking the law, shows how well its enforced. Depending on what county you are in taxing commercially for the 1st time can be easy or impossible.

You will need to CVRT it annually as its a commercial vehicle regardless of the tax on it.

If the tax expires soon keep it in his name and tell him to tax it for a year (you give him money for tax )you don't need worry about it till next year then

Ya from a tax perspective it only refers to commercial use.

Thankfully most commercial insurance policies cover social and domestic use also.

Don't think they'll accept PPS no in years. Herd no for farmers or company no for business. Tax clearance cert & declaration with Garda stamp.

Total nightmare for the ordinary lad with the jeep.

Seems to depend on the county, never had an issue using ppsn in Kildare, never needed a tax clearance cert or anything of the like.

Only ever needed the signed & stamped rf111a and money.

Why cant it just be simple!! lol
Is it possible to use a relations VAT number or must the VAT number and vehicle ownership details be the same?
What would this be worth considering that it has a tow bar and roof rack but never towed anything, never crashed and no dents.
    125,000 kms.
I wanted it for a family member but maybe I should sell/trade it in for a car?

If its as clean as it sounds then it'd be a case of name your price (within reason) especially if there's a proper service history with it. Compare with other lbw pajero sports on DD and price similarly or a touch higher.

Clean low mileage commercial 4x4's of that age are few and far between. You won't get landcruiser money but the pajeros still have a decent following although those 2.5 pajero sports have a rep of being as thirsty as a landcruiser yet not as capable at towing.

Best bet is get previous owner to tax it for a year and then come next year worry about ways to tax it again. Could even “sell” it back to him (or anyone who can easily tax a commercial) to tax it and then “buy” it back again. Owners increasing aren’t going to matter much on a vehicle of that age.

No one is paying private tax commercials that’s for sure, everyone finds a way to tax them.
