Audi Maps / Firmware question

Hi guys, I recently got myself an 2011 ASline A5 with MMI 3G (BNAV). All the firmware / maps are stock. Just wondering what the gains for updating the firmware? I have copied the maps from the original DVD to an SD Card, what I am wondering is if I get the newer map data would it be as easy as just loading it on the SD card and load it from there. I have found some info while google that suggests that the map updates requires the newer firmware. I have also found the update steps to do it, but as good as I am with computers, doing this stuff with cars has be a bit dubious as I have read some horror stories of lads bricking their MMI systems... Anyway, thoughts/knowledge would be appriciated.

EDIT - Also, I have noticed the Bluetooth can be stuttery.. the device is a tune2air, I have tried reseting the connecting etc but it still happens with my phone streaming music, it doesn't happen with any other bluetooth device I connect to.
