Island sinks?

We're planning a major kitchen renovation and the kitchen sink will dictate if we can put full length glass sliders across the back wall. To do this, we'd have to put the sink on the island. I see this everywhere now but I very much doubt the practicalities. Like, if you wash a plate and cup, you can't really leave it draining on the Island? Are these sinks for people who literally put very single thing into the dishwasher?
