Cash discount on new cars (Hyundai or Skoda)?

    Will dealers of both cars give a cash discount off the list price. Saw on another thread the average cash discount was about 7.5%. Should I look for around this level.

    Wait and see what Hyundai do with deals. They often give thousands off as part of a scrappage deal. This is extra discount the dealer doesn’t normally have to give away.

    At this stage on ex stock cars you’d aim to be getting the car for near dealer cost price. I’d push for more but it really depends on how in demand the particular model is.

    Example Hyundai wouldn’t give you a Kona for nothing, but might love if you bought an i30 estate or whatever.

    So if you are buying a new motor, already in stock and not on plates you'd expect to see 2 grand off a 40k car then?

    I’d want a lot more than that off.

    (Again depends on how in demand it is)

    Haven’t they dropped the price of that recently, I’ve no idea how popular they are.

    I actually don't know tbh. Hard to gauge how popular but interesting that you think there should be more off the 44k than 2k.

    I could be wrong but I don’t think if the car is in stock in garage really matters as most cars are held on consignment - the garage only pays the distributor when they sell it. Distributors inc VW group can offer dealers extra discounts on certain cars that are not selling well where the distributor has a lot of them in the country / especially if a facelift is due

    In the case of the Passat GTE your probably buying a fresh order on what is a new car with almost no stock in the country.

    VW are doing 0% finance so that has reduced the discount a bit but I’d be expecting you’d get 5% discount. If your buying cash you might get a bit more off. Have a look at the Superb PHEV too and compare pricing - traditionally Skoda dealers might give a better discount plus 0% finance

    Hi Distanced,
    It depends on demand and stock levels of the Model.
    If a Dealer has a large stock he will be more generous with a discount, New Cars that don't sell in the next 6/8 weeks will probably remain in stock till the New Year so a Dealer will gladly discount in order to ease his cash flow.
    This might even be down to a popular versus a not wanted at all colour !!
    However if a Car is on allocation , that is when demand is high and his supply is "allocated" by the Distributor he will match supply with demand , that's to say he needs to make profit on the limited number of units he will get .
    So there is not black and white answer , if you get more specific with your Model choice I can give you a more definitive answer.

    Back in the day we got 90 days credit on new stock cars.

    No idea how VW works. I know most of their car are factory orders so they’re different to the likes of Hyundai mentioned in the OP who don’t go in for options and personalisation as much so sell most cars ex stock.

    Distributors give Credit on unsold units for anything between 30/180 days , the unit must then be paid for in full.
    In reality it means that the unit goes from the Distributor plan to the Dealers Stocking Plan with a Bank thereby attracting an interest charge on a daily basis.
    Sold units are paid for on the Friday following registration.
    The 30/180 units differ on "fast moving" units against slower (mainly more expensive ) units.
    For instance a Honda Dealer would have 30 days on a Jazz/ 45 Days on a Civic up to 180 days on a €60,000 CRV.
    Occasionally if a Distributor had a high number of any Model that wasn't moving they will offer extended Credit terms.
    So, again , discounts can very for many reasons, sometimes it's down to how close a Dealer is to their Monthly/Quarterly volume related rebate target.
    If you are more specific regarding the Model(s) you are interested in I can give you a Ballpark Discount that you can expect.
