Trade in or keep car?

Looking for opinions on what to do here.
My wife wants to learn to drive but only in an automatic.
I have a 152 seat Leon diesel which hasn't given me any trouble, 110k km on the clock. It's manual though so she doesn't want to learn in it.
I was thinking of trading mine in for an automatic so she can learn in it & when she passed her test buy another car for me.
Thinking of spending ~15k & getting an auris hybrid or something similar.
Couple of problems. My commute is 60km on motorway. Seen some mixed opinions on hybrids on the motorway. Since I'll be using it daily I'm not sure if o should look at a diesel. She works locally so when she passed her test a hybrid would be a good option.
Other issue is trade in on my car. I'm only being offered ~6-6500. Hardly seems worth trading in for that only to replace it in a year or so.

Would you take the hit & trade it in or take it off the road for a year?
We don't want 2 cars for 1 to sit in the drive 99% of the time, plus the insurance for her on her own car would be too high (haven't got quotes yet so that's an assumption)

Another option could be to wait, and get your wife to take lessons/ driving test in a school of motoring car, then invest in another car.

I think this would be the more common route.

    Trade it in (the wife).

Now that's some solid advice! I wonder what I'd get for her?

Was offered 8k trade in today which I may go for. Waiting to hear back from a Toyota garage though. They've to the same year car but would probably cost about 3k more depending on what they offer for trade in. That car has 20k km less on the clock.

Upgrading from Girlfriend 4.0 to Wife 1.0

Absolutely hilarious! The original version has been augmented by enthusiastic geeky husbands (and wives?) Enjoy!

Upgrading from Girlfriend to Wife - Last year a friend of mine upgraded from Girlfriend 4.0 to Wife 1.0 and found that it's a memory hog leaving few system resources for other applications. He is also now noticing the Wife 1.0 is also spawning Child-processes which are further consuming valuable resources. No mention of this particular phenomenon was included in the product documentation, though other users have informed me that this is to be expected due to the nature of the application.

Not only that, Wife 1.0 installs itself so that it is always launched at system initialization where it can monitor all other system activity. Some applications such as PokerNite 10.3 , Bachelor Party 2.5, and Pubnite 7.0 are no longer able to run on the system at all, causing the system to lockup when launched (even though the apps worked fine before).

Wife 1.0 provides no installation options. Thus, the installation of undesired plug-ins such as Mother-in-law 55.8 and the Brother-in-law Beta is unavoidable. Also, system performance seems to diminish with each passing day.

Some features my friend would like to see in the upcoming Wife 2.0:

A "don't remind me again" button.
    Minimize button.
Ability to delete the "headache" file
An install feature that provides an option to uninstall 2.0 version without loss of other system resources.
An option to run the network driver in "promiscuous mode" allowing the the system's Hardware Probe feature to be much more useful/effective.

I myself wish I had decided to avoid all of the headaches associated with Wife 1.0 by sticking with Girlfriend 3.0 Even here, however, I have found many problems. Apparently you cannot install Girlfriend 4.0 on top of girlfriend 3.0. You must uninstall Girlfriend 3.0 first, otherwise the two versions of Girlfriend will have conflicts over shared use of the I/O port. Other users have told me that this is a long-standing problem that I should have been aware of. Guess that explains what happened to versions 1 and 2.

To make matters worse, the uninstall program for Girlfriend 3.0 doesn't work very well, leaving undesirable traces of the application in the system. Another identified problem is that all versions of Girlfriend have annoying little messages about the advantages of upgrading to Wife 1.0!

    VIRUS ALERT

All users should be aware that Wife 1.0 has an undocumented bug. If you try to install Mistress 1.1 before uninstalling Wife 1.0, Wife 1.0 will delete MSMoney files before doing the uninstall itself. Once that happens, Mistress 1.1 won't install and you will get an "insufficient resources" error message. To avoid the aforementioned bug, try installing Mistress 1.1 on a different system and " never" run any file transfer applications(such as Laplink) between the two systems. https://www.wanderings.net/notebook/Main/UpgradingFromGirlfriendToWife

On a more serious note what you need to know about the 4 different types of automatics gear boxes.

I would taken the car off the road for 12 months.
Does your wife have cars in mid to learn to drive in? apart for having an automtic gear box?

Hybrid cars what they are good for and why they get bad economy on the motorway.

All she wants is an auto & smallish car. We've 2 kids on car seats so need it to be practical as well.
Going to take an auris for a test drive tomorrow to see what it's like. The car itself is nice so just want to try the hybrid engine a bit more to see.

Just remember if she does the test in an automatic that is all she will be allowed to drive in the future.

There’s nothing on the automatic drivers license that distinguishes it from a manual drivers license.

If you pass your test in an automatic car, you are limited to driving vehicles in that category with automatic transmission. If you wish to drive a manual vehicle you will be required to sit and pass a further driving test to remove this restriction from your driving licence. https://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Learner-Drivers/The-Driving-Test/Your-Car/

If you let the Leon sit outside it will still drop another 1500/2000 and would still need to an NCT which will be a headache when the car isn’t taxed. You might have issues inc battery / brakes which could cost you more money. You might have small risk of it being stolen too.

If you are still doing the commute and like the diesel why not trade for a DSG Leon? If you trade to a Seat dealer you might get a better trade-in than a Toyota dealer would offer. It’s easy spend your money but you might find trading up a year or two won’t cost you much

Yes there is, there is a code beside it.

Why not buy a cheap Micra or Yaris or jazz and let her learn in that, she will destroy the Leon or something else.

    No there’s not.

There is on the back, if this were the case then what would be the point learning gears.

Anyone that has only driven a auto can't drive a manual

I have an automatic license and there’s nothing on it that’s different on my friend’s manual license.
