dehorned some calves 2 weeks ago. 2 of them have a small bit of puss coming out. I have cleaned it out with dettol and put savlon cream on them. Is there anything else I can do?
These calves belong to the kids so can't let them get sick or i will be out on my hole.

Did you put anything on the area after dehorning. I spray with footrot spray to clean area and also to keep flies away.

Silver spray and sudocreme. Put Stockholm tar on after 2 days. This is the routine I have used for a few years never a problem.

    Are they inside or outside?

Silver spray is good. I use the footrot spray as it lying around as there is also sheep here. Do you use a gas or electric dehorner. The heat recently may have had them scratching. Other than what you have done, maybe keep an eye on it. A visit to the vet might assist if not healing.

Outside by day inside at night. These are 2 bucket reared calves I bought for the kids.

Silver spray should only be used on a fresh wound, using it now will only keep in infection and delay healing, i wouldn't use it on a burn in any case

A mixture of salt and water would be as good as any, and something to keep the flies at bay .

If puss I’d think it a vet job and a course of anti biotic

I'd give the vet a shout aswell. Could even be maggots in there under the puss with this weather

Happened us a couple of times & I took the calf in, removed the scab & flushed out the wound til all (bleugh) maggots & pus were gone. Then shot of LA & lathered the fresh wounds in bluespray & tar. Just unfortunate in this hot weather with the flies, I left off dehorning late calves in 2018 purely for that reason.

Rang the vet. He said to flush it out this eve as normal and if any sign of maggots to ring him first thing in the morning. Called into chemist on way from work. No dettol to be found in town. He gave me a surgical wound cleaner. So I will clean it out later and apply cream. Hopefully no maggots didn't see any so far so fingers crossed with a bit of careful minding they will clear up.
