Car tax expired: trading-in or scrapping my car.

My car tax expired at end of March. It has been in the driveway since lockdown.

I want to get rid of it in July as a trade in or by getting it scrapped.

Do I need a current tax certificate to do this?

Will I be hit for arrears when I go to tax my new car?

    Thanks

You just need the Vehicle Registration Certificate.

Obviously you shouldn’t drive the car without tax so you’ll have to arrange collection by the garage.

Arrears are linked to the current owner on that car only, so they’re not in any way linked to your potential new car, nor are they payable by any new registered owners of your old car.
