New car for my father

Hey lads, my dad is looking at trading up and is getting a few cost to change prices from a few dealers. He is currently driving a 2009 Toyota Auris 1.33 litre with only 49k genuine miles that he has owned for the last 10 years and is in good condition. He is looking at a 1 year old Kia Stonic K3 petrol. He likes the higher driving position and compact size of the Stonic along with the remainder of the Kia 7 year warranty.

So far the cheapest cost to change price he is getting is around 16k on one he really likes the colour of down the country, while other closer ones the common theme seems to be between 16500 and 17000 with his own car. Hard to know whether that sort of money is competitive or not given some dealers are mentioning cash prices as retail prices. In my own mind coming up 10 years for 16k isn't a bad cost to change price but then again the Stonic is in the class below the likes of the Auris so maybe it's not the best deal in the world. FWIW a brand new Stonic K3 petrol is coming in at about 26k but he has no interest in buying new as a 1 year ticks all boxes for less money.

    Anyone any thoughts?

Would you be prepared to sell the Auris privately?

You’d be eaten alive for an early 1.33 with low mileage.

Has he looked at the Hyundai Kona?

OP find out the straight sale cost of any car you are buying. If you sell the Auris yourself as Colm stated it should be easy. I imagine you get at least 3k for it with milage like that.

€3k was what I was thinking too, assuming it’s a good UK spec.

Yeah, each of the dealer he visited or spoke to had no problem taking the car. Normally I'd have suggested to sell privately but my father is 72 so he would be nervous about meeting strangers and letting them test drive his car, with Covid-19 and social distancing still very much a thing. I'd have thought about selling it myself but I live a good few miles away from him so I'd have to collect the car every time someone asked to see it and then deal with tyre kickers who don't actually bother turning up for a finish.

He looked at the Kona but the Stonic interior feels like it has a bit more quality finish to it, the spec on the Stonic is also better and the Kia warranty works out better given the tiny annual mileage he does.

The cash price of the 191 Stonic is 19500 and they want 16500 with the Auris but I reckon there is another 500 off to be wiggled off that so probably 16k.

The Auris is a TR spec so decent enough spec as Toyotas of that era go. NCT extended to November too.

Could he front the cash for a straight sale without selling the Auris first and give you the Auris to sell? It really does seem crazy to trade it. You're likely to get the trade-in value as a discount which I know, you know.

Good luck with the kia. Nice looking Motor

I'll need to check with him but I think he is stretched even at 16k.

Would he not stick with Toyota and go CHR?

Yeah fair. I take your point. Dealing with the public is some ballache.

Prices of used CHR's are just ridiculous.

First step is to establish what the 191 Stonic is worth. I’m afraid I have no idea

I check the straight price for the Kia Stonic it might be very near the 16.5k. While for a good clean car like that a main dealer may retail it many will sell it to trade. In either situation they will factor I. A sum to cover the warranty risk. Most buyers will give you very near the retail price for such a car.

I spoke to him this evening and 16k with his own car is his absolute max budget. Local dealer is pushing a 202 base model which doesn't even had air con, bizarrely it has a pan roof which he has absolutely no interest in but they have a 191 Ceed that he is going to take a look at tomorrow.

Just to put some closure on this.

He ended up buying a 1 year old Stonic from a Kia dealer in Cork. The cost to change was a nice bit cheaper than any others he tried. The dealer was very easy to deal with and even brought the car up from Cork for him to have a test drive in it. I know he might have done a bit better selling the Auris privately but I think when you get to the later stages of life, convenience and a painless transaction are worth a few quid alone.

Ditto...the cloud of the private person coming back to your doorstep causing hassle if something goes wrong after you sell it always puts me off..
