I’m thinking of purchasing a Rouge or Vendeen Ram. Might keep some of the offspring to breed and will be lambing outside in April/May.

    Anyone any recommendations ?

Rouge would have better maternal ability, but a lot of them are very wild, we had some yearlings this year and they were stone mad , housed about 6 weeks before lambing and they settled down a lot , good mothers but found 2 dead lambs presume they laid on them

also have a roubex ram and the offspring are tamer

Have had Vendeen here with many years and have no difficulties with them. Generally very calm sheep and good mothers but can be a bit lacking in milk so you should be looking at a ram with good maternal figures if you do decide to go down that route. I haven't kept any for the last 3 or 4 years but will be buying one next month again, hopefully.

And the lambs are damn tasty as well!

As orm0nd said above, the Rouge have a bit of a reputation for being a bit excitable. A friend bred a few PBs for a couple of years, great sheep but can take a good bit of patience to manage them, if you like them staying where you want them.

Every time I see a rogue, I cannt helpbut wonder if a little bit of charly blood sneaked in at some stage . @ wrangler would tell you all you need to know about the vendeen, dont think they're marketed as a maternal breed

Rouge maddest sheep I ever had about me. Good mothers and mines seemed prolific mostly all doubles without 2 many triplets. Still some rouge blood in a few ewes here but easy enough managed when crossed. No experience with the vendeens.

We've some lovely vendeen ewes here bred out of texel x Lleyn,
The breed itself is very prolific, maybe too much so, and they have loads of milk due to texel/lleyn .
Very docile compared to the lleyn

the other way around charollais are essentially southdowns with a dash of rouge
