Stuck between 3 cars

    Hi all,

I'll be getting a car probably near the end of the year/ start of next year and i'm stuck between 3 mid range cruisers.

    I have my eyes on a 2018/2019 Jaguar XF R-sport, a Volvo S90 D5 or a Volkswagen Arteon R-LINE.

Has anyone any experience with these? What are your opinions on them?

Saw the thread title and thought this may be a parking wars post...:o

I would go for the Arteon in a parking war any day!

The S90 cabin is a lovely place to be especially in cream, I had a loaner when our old XC was getting some work done and I really liked the S90 for cruising the motorways. Cork to Dublin and back was a pleasure as everything is in the right place.

The T4 engine when pushed is its weakness, buckets of torque low down and pulls like a train but it's a very narrow band and feels jerky at times. Its fine when driving normally though and I would forgive it for long journeys

Volvo for sure. Stretch to an R Design if you can

Volvo is a class above the other two, the top spec Inscription is a lovely car

It depends on what your priorities are.

The Jag is a bit of a relic at this stage, I’d have said the Volvo normally, but I’d definately be tempted by a specced up Arteon.

The usual criticism of the Arteon is that it has a Passat interior.

    Absolutely, the Volvo.

As Colm says, the XF is long in the tooth now. Although it is nice, I spent time driving one in the UK last summer as a relative works for JLR and has one from work.

I'd still go for the Volvo though. Wouldn't really consider the Arteon. Like the Passat CC, it'll be the yuppies car of choice when it gets to about 5/6 years old (especially in white with the biggest alloys) & VW isn't all that these days.

Isn’t Momentum the entry level with Inscription and R-Design above?

VW all the way for me. The Arteon is a class looking car with the right spec. Depreciation would be massive on the Volvo and the Jag is ancient.

Yes in fact it is, I stand corrected!

Style and looks are subjective but the Aerton is an awful looking car for what it is. The previous CC was a lovely car but the new one is a big step down in style. It’s a bit like the latest small BMW’s, they are hideous compared to their predecessors.
If you are considering a large cruiser what about the obvious choices? E Class and 5 Series?

Have you actually driven these 3 cars O.P?

If not that should be your first priority.

Not yet, theres no garages with any S90's or XF's around. My local WV garage had no Arteons on the forecourt but are gonna ring me when one comes in.

Definitely not the Jag as they’re just old hat. S90 is a more of a luxury tourer, the Arteon a but more sports tourer. Depends on what you’re using it for. Endless motor miles Volvo is probably better bet. In terms of badge snobbery I guess the Volvo edges it if it bothers you.
Arteon is a beautiful car though, both great cars

S90 looks Ok value for the size of car. It’s 5 series size but looks more like 3 series money

That sensible kind of advice has no place here!

You can pick up some decent example R Design models, 2 years old in the UK for sub 20k Stg. Madness

Really depends what you want from the car.

I find the S90 to just be a big barge of a car plus as said the XF is old and interior quality just isn't there. The Arteon is the best looking of that bunch by a long shot but the engine choice in Ireland is poor and given the premium being asked for them I'd want an interior a bit more unique than one just lifted straight out of a Passat.

What is your budget, you would get a current model Merc E Class for similar money to those 3 cars or maybe an Audi A5 Sportback if you want something more sportier looking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

An E350 Hybrid would be a great choice, you can pick them up cheap and the VRT is minimal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,539 ✭✭✭sk8board

S90 - if you need all that space, as it’s a total barge in real life, but I’d only have it in r-design
Arteon R-line is the best looking car vw make IMHO (I drive a gran coupe, so I like those 5 door coupes)
Jag is so old, it has no place on this list. Has the most awful infotainment too, compared to the offering from vw and Volvo.

By the time, VRT, currency difference and transport are paid for would it be vastly different to picking one up here?

Only thing would put me off the S90 is the sheer size. The S60 is really nice but only available as a petrol hybrid now which must be denting their fleet sales.

Probably land a UK one for 28k. Maybe 2 grand to be saved there in fairness. Thats assuming you pay 19k stg/21k eur in the UK. VRT and nox come in at 6500. Leave 500 for travel.

Not as good as I thought but 2 grand is 2 grand. Did not assume there would be the similar value here as in the UK. That being said, you might better haggle on the price here than in the UK.

You may get better spec and more options in the UK

Im looking at the V90s as an option currently.

I agree that the R Design is the best looking but frustratingly doesn't seem to be available in full leather but rather half.

That's what turned me on to the volvo. I seen a V90 knocking around and fell in love but I'm not sure i can justify the size of it. So the S90 is a decent compromise.

To answer your question. Budget is probably around 35k. I'm not a huge fan of the E class looks wise.
