    Hi all

We're thinking of bringing back our mapping app, the app had to be "retired" due to changes at google, they retired all the data storage which left the app with no data to display.

    We were wondering if:
    1. There's any scope for the app now?
    2. If there's scope what data would be useful to display?
    3. Any suggestions or ideas?
    4. There's a lack of public data available, so all new sources of data are welcome (privately or publicly)

We'll have a beta version ready for testing soon...

    some technical bits:
The new app will be an exercise in using angular, rxjs(which is amazing)and MySQL

Any thoughts or comments are welcome and thanks for the support for the last version:)

    • Rural FTTP seems to be set fair for the future except eVDSL premises (c. 3000) in Eircom 300K concession. They need to be identified or they’ll be stuck with it ’til 2045.
    • Urban FTTP needs watching, Map should identify gaps between NBP and Eircom/Siro/VM urban FTTP roll-out.
    • VDSL failures in blue urban areas seem to be getting no response from DCCAE since map was closed last October. A facility to publish the problem eircodes on IrelandOffline would be useful.
    • Crowd source map on sightings of NBP/NBI surveyors/subcontractors
    • NBI BCPs are public domain.
    • NBI OLTs (227) seem to be at same locations as Eircom exchanges (which are public domain)

WISPS have done some joint coverage modelling with WisDM maybe they’d share the rasters with you.
Imagine have published a map. The base station locations are extractable. Very rough coverage modelling might be possible using SRTM data (usual caveats apply). Alternatively they might give you the rasters. (again caveats apply)

    Mobile
Show map with coverage slider so people can see what 70-99% coverage means under geographic coverage and population coverage.

    Suggested AIE requests to ComReg
    • All the antenna data supplied by MNOs that supports the mobile coverage map
    • All the raster files used to depict the coverage map. Including raster classification intervals for signal quality.
    • All the bi-annual drive test data created since 2012. (eg here for winter 2016)
    • All the coverage self-assessment reports supplied by MNOs since 2012

    Suggested FOI request
    • All expenses claims presented to ComReg by Consumer Panel members since 2012. Publish them.

We really need the virgin footprint scraped....

Of course there is a need for an independent and impartial map.

There should have been no need to ask that question.

Be aware that some ComReg location data can be off by 100 metres or more.

You could use www.OpenStreetMap.org - anyone can edit it and bulk data can be imported.
    Exchanges: http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/UwU
    Data centres: http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/UwX
Street cabinets (all telecom types): http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/UwY
Communication masts (all communication types): http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/UwZ

If nothing shows, click 'Run'. May not work on certain devices.

It can be done (fairly easily) but the data is so disorganized as to be pretty worthless

The main questions are reliable sources of real data (not made up aspirational stuff):)

Yeah be very helpful as to highlight some areas where there are issues like Siro only covering half of my estate.

    Thanks for the ideas!

Also if anyone would like to help, in any way, just let us know?

Also if you'd like to see where we're at with regard to the app, let us know and we can send you a link to a beta site and any feedback from the beta would be brilliant:)

Are their telesales working with the same dataset or is it just the public facing data thats so poor?

You obviously have all the cellular site data from SiteViewer which is from my testing between fairly accurate and spot on.

PM me and I'll link you to a very early beta site, it's not deployed on the IoffL site as yet.

Beware of bugs and let us know if you spot any:)

Happy to be an app beta tester. Have an android phone

#1 is the "spider map", attempting to get it as a kml at the moment it's only a patchwork of bitmaps so not a lot of use for analysis

No coverage data on the "urban" rollout except a few town/exchange names

    • VDSL failures in blue urban areas seem to be getting no response from DCCAE since map was closed last October. A facility to publish the problem eircodes on IrelandOffline would be useful.

Can do but is it worth anything? Except for logging it doesn't do or tell us much...

    • NBI BCPs are public domain.

    NBI stuff all done:)

Talking to some RISPA ppl and they've been great

Will check, they were fairly forthcoming last time...

    Mobile
Show map with coverage slider so people can see what 70-99% coverage means under geographic coverage and population coverage.
meh, again they've only got silly bitmaps available so no analysis like that available

DCCAE's "NBP_APRIL17_COVER" map is vector (though polygons not points). They should have an updated version.
No coverage data on the "urban" rollout except a few town/exchange names
Maybe pre-qual data would show where Eircom's roll-out is headed. VM could be crowdsourced by systematic use of their coverage checker.
Can do but is it worth anything? Except for logging it doesn't do or tell us much...
A lot of people in limbo and DCCAE not answering questions on urban fails.
NBI promised to publish a roll-out schedule and haven't done so.
meh, again they've only got silly bitmaps available so no analysis like that available
ComReg's MBSA2 looks like another sell-out on rural mobile coverage. Vector map here. IMO, important to know what 70%, 85%, 90% population coverage actually looks like, and who's likely to lose out again.

Would be interested to see the beta / report any issues if needed.

should be ready with an early test version by the end of the week (other stuff has to be done first<g>)

    Will let ppl know then...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭IrelandOffline_

We ran into a problem doing geographic calculations on absolutely monstrous kml files, this looks like it's under control but is quite slow and will require a lot of testing and manipulation. We can simplify the kml files down to more manageable levels and remove all the unimportant details (from our perspective), this is in now hand:)

Hopefully we should be in action soon, it may take a little longer than anticipated...

(and then the real world came calling and some of us had to attend to those things instead, bills etc<g>)

    Hi all

Finally our map (beta) app is up:

    http://irelandoffline.org/newmap

As this is a test/beta we need all feedback and if possible steps to reproduce any weird stuff, no matter how trivial it seems this will help make the app more useful...Think of it as beta testing:)

We still haven't found a way of loading the large ftth file quickly but we're working on it.
